    Is it possible to use single-mode fiber with 1000SX / J4858B mini gbic's? The distance is not an issue (less than multimode specs, but no multimode pairs available).

    Hi

    You can use both Multi mode and Single mode fiber to connect to the Gigbit-SX-LC Mini-GBIC J4859B.

    But to the Gigabit-LX-LC J4858B you can connect only the Multi Mode fiber.

    Good Luck !!!

    Hi Miika
    Hi Mohieddin Kharnoub !
    Is it nich like that:
    J4858B = 1000B SX-LC for multimode (62.5/125 µm or 50/125 µm);
    designed for short-distance (<550 m max.)

    J4859B = 1000B LX-LC for single mode or multimode (62.5/125 µm or 50/125 µm)
    designed for 10 km (single mode) or 550 m (multimode)

    And LC is the Plug-Type

    Good luck
    Carsten

    From what I'm reading in google groups, you'd be very lucky if it worked over single-mode fiber.

    Mohieddin Kharnoub

    The official specification is actually the other way round, 1000SX support multimode and 1000LX multi- and singlemode.

    Carsten

    This is the specification that can be found from HP site, the official one.

    As google didn't provide any specific results I did a field test after getting the correct cables, and I succeeded in connecting 2x1000SX modules with single-mode 2m cable and approximately 200+ m building single-mode cable. So I suppose the single-mode could work with the same lenght as multi-mode, but it's not supported and may or may not work...
