  • 1.  2930m Additional Switch to Stack

    Posted May 05, 2025 03:42 PM

    Hi All,

I currently have a two switch 2930m stack managed from Aruba Central.

I need to add a third 2930m switch to the stack.

I believe I need to add the third switch via Aruba Central specify its mac address and product code in a similar way to how the original stack was configured.
    Is this correct?

Can anyone confirm the cable stacking config.

And can I add the third switch without interrupting the first two switches, or will the whole stack reboot?

    Many thanks,

    Ste

    Hi@shpat,

Thank you for the video link.

However that video focuses on the 2930f model which I think used VSF instead of BPS used by the 2930m.

As per the Techdocs, the 2930m supports Stacking via Aruba Central using Template Groups and UI Groups.
The UI Groups onboarding conductors and members can be configured for VSF and BPS Stacking.

Unfortunately, as i am aware, you can't add it live network infrastructure without a full stack reboot. This because, the entire stack has to renumber members, rebuild the topology and reboot to apply stack membership changes.

Hi @shpat, technically speaking a reboot of the whole Stack will not happen if a new Stack member should be added on a well formed Stack, it doesn't mattere if the Stack was made through VSF or Back Plane Stacking. A member renumbering is also not required: the topology could be simply remain what actually is (adding a new member to one end of an existing Stack depolyed with a Chain topology or inserting a new member to a Stack deployed with a Ring topology could not necessarily cause the split of the Stack if Conductor and Standby members will continue to be well connected in the fragment that eventually form when/if the Stack is explicitly divided for the new member addition).

In any case I suggest @stewea to familiarize with documents like the one available here and current Aruba 2930M/2930F ATMG for ArubaOS-Switch 16.11 (PDF here). Despite working with Aruba Central would be always useful to know tips and tricks about (VSF-/BPS-based) Stacking.

Not having Aruba Central, I don't know how the addition of a new Stack member should be managend by Central but, physically speaking, some tasks are independent by the tool controlling the stack (the fact that a Switch needs to be physically added and interconnected).
