Hi Stephen, the HP ProCurve 3800's KA.15.16.0005 software version was built 19-11-2014, so more than 7 Years ago (see
here for a timeline) and it runs on BootROM version KA.15.09 (keep in mind that Software version and BootROM follow different "versioning" and this could be confusing).
Both the latest KA.16.04 software version (
KA.16.04.0023) - the one you cited as your desired version - and the latest KA.16.02 software version (
KA.16.02.0028) run on BootROM version KA.15.10.
That's valid also considering an the
KA.16.01.0012 software version of KA.16.01 software branch; moving from KA.15.16 to any KA.16.n (n=01, 02 or 04, as example) - from the point of view of BootROM upgradeability requirements - looks the same (consequently to me it implies that using KA.16.01, KA.16.02 or KA.16.04 software versions as final or interim versions is mostly the same, potentially they are all good final/interim candidates so, if I were let to chose, I will plan for moving directly to the latest one KA.16.04).
The above mismatch between BootROM versions also means that, whichever upgrade path you will chose to follow, it will mandatorily require to automatically reboot each Switch twice, from documentation: "I
f your switch has an older version of BootROM, the BootROM will be updated with this version of software." and "During the software update, the switch will automatically boot twice. The switch will update the primary BootROM, then reboot, and then update the secondary BootROM. After the switch flash memory is updated and the final boot is initiated, no additional user intervention is needed. Do not interrupt power to the switch during this important update.").
Since your initial software version is so old, any upgrade path will include an update to the BootROM version first (BootROM KA.15.09 -> BootROM KA.15.10), If I were you I will (a) backup my stack configuration and keep it on a safe place and then (b) evaluate the KA.15.16 -> (BootROM update) -> KA.16.02 -> KA.16.04 upgrade path (or, eventually, a single step KA.15.16 -> (BootROM update) -> KA.16.04 upgrade path).
Try to familiarize first about how to update Software on a backplane stack by reading the guide published
here.

Subject: 3800 J9574A Firmware Updates
Hi All,
I've inherited a six stack of 3800 J9574A switches.
They are running KA.15.16.0005 and Boot ROM Version : KA.15.09
I'm looking to update to KA.16.04.0023.
Can I go straight to that version or do I need to go up in stages?
Thoughts anyone?
