  • 1.  655-T Device Missing Factory Cert

    Posted Feb 10, 2025 03:14 AM

I have purchased a few grey-market AP-655's but they are behaving strangely. I can't find out very much information about the (T) variant (R7J38-61002). They were unopened and did not have any OS image installed.

    • HPE Asset Management doesn't believe the Serial Numbers are valid
    • show ap tpm-info returns "not initialized"
    • There is no device certificate installed
    • AOS 8.12.02 runs without issue, but AOS 8.12.03 boot loops, likely due to introduction of automatic reboot upon detection of TPM issues

Are these counterfeit devices or otherwise not fully factory commissioned?

I don't know AP 'T' models. I suspect those to be pre-production sample models, or indeed counterfeit.

If someone knows, it's probably @onno Harms.

Regardless, TPM uninitialized is a big no-go to deploy these APs, and it's not possible to initialize them after APs left the factory. And serial number not recognized is another red-flag. I would return them to the seller, don't think you can do something useful with them.

From what I'm remembering, those units may have been reported as stolen.

Yup, we did end up missing some -T APs from our warehouse. Those are internal units that should eventually become our TAA compliant SKUs. These have not completed the manufacturing process, and are useless for any actual WLAN deployment.

I hope you did not spend too much on these, and doubt your grey-market seller will take them back..

Oh wow, thanks so much for quickly confirming my (worst) suspicions. So is the -T basically an internal tracking identifier before they become regionalized as part of the final manufacturing steps? There are a handful of other posts around reddit and the like about -T models.

There were a good deal, but not so good of a deal that they were outside the open box US SKU prices. If anybody wants to look into it further, the listing is still up on eBay (Item 396133407621) and one of the serial numbers is visible in the photos. I received serially adjacent units.

I've opened a claim and will return the units.

Thanks, yeah the -T products require some work in our local (US) warehouse to become functional units and qualify as "made in US" and TAA compliant.
