  • 1.  7220 Cluster layer 1 mesh

Hi all,  I have a clustered pair of 7220s that are connected to a clustered pair of HPE 8320 switches.  I have a single layer 1 connection from each 7220 to one of the CX switches.

What I would like to do is build in some layer 1-2 redundancy for when I have to take down one of the 8320 switches for maintenance.  Something like this:

Can anyone offer any advice or reading on how I might best accomplish this?  Most of what I am finding is articles on how to build a cluster for High Availability of the cluster for the APs, but nothing on how to build out redundancy for layer 1-2 to my switches.

My goal is to prevent the migration of APs when a switch goes down because this often results in strange behaviour from the APs afterward such as clients not being able to pass traffic off the AP.
    Thanks for any insight.

    Hi Bill,

best way will be to  define a MCLAG (multi-chassis link aggregate) towards each Controller as you mention the 8320 are a "clustered pair" I do assume you have a VSX-setup in place.

Thus if one of the 8320 will be down still both controller will be reachable/working though only halve of the bandwidth to each is available; andthere will be no failover for any client/AP connection. Of course - assuming the 8320-pair does have redundant "uplinks" to your rest of the network....

just to mention: on controller side you need to define a LAG as well

You have a clustered MDs and should be hitless if a switch goes down. We have setup similar to what you want to accomplish, our MDs are both connected to a cisco Nexus switch using vPCs. We had an issue where one of the fiber was bad and every time this link flaps the AP/clients moves to the other MD so we decided to move the links 1 to 1 instead of splitting them.
