  • 1.  Add new AP 505 to Virtual Controller

    Posted Jan 18, 2023 11:23 AM

    Good day all,

I am by no means an IT expert, just looking for a little help creating a simple home network with one ssid to replace an old wifi network.

I'm sure I am missing something easy but here we go. I have a few AP 505's. I am just trying to create a simple network using these. I've upgraded to the new Instant firmware, I can log into them individually by both the IP and the "setmeup" ssid.   Following the documentation, it says to create a VC IP, done. When I goto "add access point" the little plus sign is greyed out. I have converted them to default virtual controller mode. One is set to "master". They pull dchp from my fortigate router via a Poe switch.

I have an existing Aruba network using older iap225 and 305s and didn't have any issues getting those working back in the day. Just Trying to take advantage of some new technology.

    any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks in advance

    matt

Would you be able to if auto-join is turned on? You can turn this on and just let it allow any AP on the same version to join the cluster. Also make sure they are on the same L2 VLAN. Also check to see if your country codes are set.

Sorry, don't want to necro bump if this is post is already closed.

I have the exact same problem with 6 Aruba 505, none of them would join the virtual controller, even after adding the lines

    allow-new-aps

    allowed-ap xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx

for all the other 5 APs, but it seems like they just dont want to join the Virtual controller.

where is that configuration for auto-join?

I have seen throught the entire UI but I cant see that option in there.

    Firmware 8.10.0.4_85105.

I'll appreciate any help you may provide.

    Thanks for your reply

That option is already on in the virtual controller, but it seems like none of the AP can join the VC and no errors are shown on UI or CLI.

Swarm state in one of the APs

    AP Swarm State :swarm_conductor_found
    mesh auto eth0 bridging :no
    Config in flash :no
    factory SSID in flash :yes
    extended-ssid configured :no
    extended-ssid active :yes
    advanced-zone configured :no
    Factory default status :yes
Source of system time :NTP server
    Config load cnt :0
    VC Channel index :0
    IDS Client Gateway Detect :yes
Config Init success cnt for heartbeat :0
Config Init success cnt for register :0
Config Init skipping cnt for heartbeat :0
Config Init skipping cnt for register :0
Config Init last success reason :N/A
Config Init last success time :N/A
    Radio down state :0x0 / 0x0 / 0x0
    Thermal Protect state :None
    6gHz VAP numbers :0 / 0
    6GHz disabled in MFG :FALSE

but in UI only the virtual controller AP is showing on the Configuration-> Access Points and the other are not showing in there and they do not propagate the Wireless Networks configured on the VC.

what can be done in this situation?

On the Dashboard->overview the VC shows 5 AP in down state.

the main solution for this  issue are

    • ensure the firmware for the APs are the same.
    • and then factory default the new APs.

Already did that multiple times, but the result is the same.

Now I'm at the brink of removing those Aruba AP and send it back to HPE, becuase it is not possible that such APs are so diffucult to setup on a small network.

I've tried everything that could be done but this just don't work.

Also tried to open a case on Aruba support portal but when Ilogin to it, it says that they cant find my profile and i need to open a case with Aruba support portal, but how i'll do that if the Aruba support portal tells me that my profile cant be found!!!

Sorry for the rant, but i've lost 4 days trying to get the APs to work and they just refuse to do what they are intended to do.

thats really weird, if you have tried all this, then there is something in the LAN infrastrictre that is preventing them to form a cluster.

have you tried having the new APs in their own VLAN, they should clear a cluster.

    And you were right!

After the support case opened with ASP and some testing with another switch I found that the reason for all this weird behaviour in Aruba APs was because of the security settings that were set on by default in the swtich by the manufacturer.

For anyone that could be in a similar situation the Switch is a  PLANET GS-4210-48P4S 48-Port 10/100/1000T 802.3at PoE + 4-Port 100/1000X SFP Managed Gigabit Switch.

The settings that were on by default are on the attached images.marke in red

On security -> DoS Global Settings

    on Security  -> DAI

Thanks to all the people that took the time to provide some help, I hope this information can help others.
