  • 1.  Adding an MM to Controllers

    Posted Feb 10, 2021 03:48 PM
    Hi,

I looked through the Aruba 8 Fundamentals PDF and looked through this forum but I am still unclear on the best way to add a virtual MM to two existing 7205 controllers (Master/Stand-by) on version 8.5? Is it as simple as installing the MM and adding the controllers or do I need to rebuild configs? Would one of the controllers need to be a MCM and the other terminate AP's?

    Thanks for any input?
    Marc

The configuration would have to be on the MM. The MM pushes the configuration down to the controllers, not the other way around.

    Hi Marc,

Basicly you need the following steps, migration strategy with minimum downtime is possible but not descripted.

    1. Install a virual Mobily Master
    2. Migrate your licences in the license portal from controller to the mobility master.
    3. Built your full configuration in de Mobility Master
    4. Factory default your controllers and firmware update to the same leven as the MM
(8.5.0.11 is the conservative release at the moment).
    5. Config your controller with basic IP connectivity to reach the Mobility Master.
    6. The controller will initiate the IPSEC tunnel to the Mobility Master
    7. Mobility Master will push the configuration to the managed device (controller)

    Hope this help you...

    Hi Mkk,

I assume I cannot restore the hardware appliance MM config to a virtual MM and I need to build the VMM config by scratch?

    Thanks

When you say you have a hardware MM, do you mean a Mobility Master, or a Master Controller (as in Master/Local setup)?

    Hi,

    It's 7205s version 8 in a master/local setup.

    Thanks

Yes you will have to build the configuration from scratch on the AOS8 Mobility Master.

How about a 7005 running 8.7.1.8 with no config on it, only licensing.

need to connect it to a vMConductor running 8.7.1.8 without having to factory reset the controller.
There is no way to simply create the necessary ipsec keys to connect to the vMConductor?

the vMCndr uis setup with licensing and necessary IPSEC keys pointing to the MC.

    Thoughts?

You can add the 7005. You would configure the security key up on both sides (vMC/vMM and MD/7005). When you do , the configuration will be replaced with the config that exists in the MDs parent folder. You should migrate your licensing off of the 7005 and to the vMC/vMM.

    OK thanks.

I know i should but this for a lab and I am going to keep the licensing on the 7005 for the time being. I have other licensing on the MM.

I am just familiarising myself with AOS8.
I can't find the CLI commands to connect the 7005 to the MM.

You would point a controller to an MM with "masterip <IP> ipsec <SharedSecret> interface vlan <Controller management VLAN>"

You will not be able to carry over the licenses for that 7005, you will need to convert them to your MM Passphrase.

couldn't I keep the licensing on my MC even though I have some on my MM?

I understand that the MM will not inherit the licensing from my 7005 as that it is not tied to the MM passphrase and it is not supported.

I just don't want to remove them from there and simply use the licensing from the MM and don't care if they can't be used just yet.

in any case, I think I will remove the 7005 and add a 9004 with some licensing to my lab.

Keep the 7005 as a standalone or for a multizone lab?

I should clarify that it is already configured in standalone mode....so from what I am reading, there is no way to convert it to an MD.

I need to do a wr erase in order to connect it....
