Q_0006: Why is a silent device a problem for the network?

It's a device that connects to the network but usually doesn't talk or send data, like a sleeping printer 🖨️ or a door badge scanner 💳. They go into a power-saving mode to save energy. Remember the same is true with most of "Wired Enterprise Offices, Building Devices, and IoT & Security Devices".

The first-hop security guard (the CX switch) needs every device/client to show its ID card (authenticate) before it can use the internet. But the security guard waits for the device to say "Hello" first! Since the silent device is sleeping and doesn't send a "Hello" packet, the switch doesn't know it's there and keeps the door locked.

How about a new trick that lets the security guard (the switch) be the one to start the conversation! Instead of waiting, the switch sends a special message called a "probe packet," which is like a wake-up call for the sleeping device. When the sleeping device gets the tiny probe message, it is forced to wake up and send a quick answer back. That quick answer is enough for the switch to finally see the device's ID, check it, and then safely let it onto the network.
