  • 1.  AOS10 architecture - active/active?

    We are planning for the move to AOS 10 from 8.

    Hello,

    We currently have a centralised cluster of several controllers (actually we have 2 active clusters and 2 standby clusters as we hit the max AP count limit). Two sets of Conductor & Standby Conductor. AOS 8.10.0.16

    If we were to retain a centralised cluster model in AOS 10 (we haven't actually decided this yet, comments on this would be helpful too!) is it possible to have the active and standby clusters running in active/active mode - or is active/active only relevant to in-cluster redundancy? I know that the redundancy options are pretty much the same in general between AOS 8 and 10.

    In AOS10, you configure per WLAN/SSID a cluster and optionally a secondary cluster in case the primary cluster is not available:

    But you may consider a single cluster of 4 gateways which is active-active-active-active in that case. I don't think there is a active/standby mode anymore, unless you configure a single gateway as primary and another as secondary, but not sure in which case that would make sense.

    Thanks Herman,

    So if we wanted our 'standby' cluster to be earning its keep we could set the primary cluster for some SSIDs to be that cluster. I guess that has some uses (apart from spreading the load, though n AOS 10 the capacity is vastly increased per gateway so that's probably not a big issue anyway), ie making sure the both clusters are functioning properly. 

    As I understand it essentially redundancy is the same in AOS 10 in that there is in-cluster redundancy (hitless), and the option to specify the equivalent of LMS and Backup LMS (not hitless) as you have described.

    Yes, the secondary cluster is LMS/B-LMS equivalency.

    Note, to configure multiple different primary clusters on a single AP requires the Advanced AP license as that is technically the AOS 10 Multizone feature.
