If I purchase AP-305 and replace the firmware, can I use it as IAP-305?
Is it necessary to replace the firmware to use AP-305 as IAP-305?
Is the hardware a common design?

No, you cannot replace the AP-305 firmware to make it an IAP-305. IAP models are tied to the regulatory domain (US/RW/JP/IL) which is burned into the AP.

AP models don't have regulatory code, so can't run Instant Firmware (or rather: the radios will not come up and you will see errors and cannot login after you loaded Instant firmware on an AP model).

As Herman already wrote, you can't just upload Instant FW on AP-305. You need to convert it from controller with AP CONVERT command.

Search community for AP conversion. There was a long thread on this topic some time ago.

Please not that the procedure that Gorazd mentioned is explicitly unsupported to run Instant firmware on an AP-305, and should only be used with support of Aruba TAC. If you are about to purchase APs, I would strongly recommend you to get IAP versions to avoid disappointments.
