We have noticed that our new 635 APs get provisioned in 'Power Restricted' Mode.

I verified inline power to be at:

Interface Admin  Oper       Power   Device              Class Max

    Gi1/0/22  auto   on         28.3    Ieee PD             4     30.0

When I forced to Max Power of 30, it still shows up power restricted.

    Gi1/0/22  static on         30.0    Ieee PD             4     30.0

I have also tried on both 2960 and 9200 switches.

The System LED is stuck in Amber while all 3 radio LEDs are Green.

    Any solution or workaround?

    Thanks!

    Alex,

You need 802.3bt (60W – aka PoE++) power to get rid of the "r" restricted power flag.

    Thanks,

    Brad

Enable IPM when powered at Class4 (802.3at) or provide two Class4 powered connections.

Enabling IPM should do the trick (since the AP-635 is perfectly happy on class 4 as long as the USB port is not sourcing max power), but dual POE will not. AP-635 does not support POE combining (as AP-655 does), since there's hardly ever a need for that.

Ah, yes, forgot to check that list first.

Here's a screenshot from one of my bt switches:

"show ap power-mgmt-statistics" will give information on what the AP is doing for power management.

"show ap debug system-status |begin 'Power Status'" will show additional information about the power negotiation by the AP.

Note: You'll need to specify the AP when running those commands.

If the AP is negotiating only to Class 4 but Class5/6 is available, are you plugging the AP directly into the switch or is there a PoE injector inline?  LLDP is fully running on the switch?  Any relevant logs on the switch or controller?

    Did you enable IPM?

    Thank you all.

After Enabling IPM flag, I dont see the 'Power Restricted' flag on the AP anymore.

    AP system profile "IPM-AP-PROFILE"
    IPM activation                                  Enabled
IPM power reduction steps with priorities       N/A
    IPM Steps delete all                            No

There are a lot of options for IPM, do I need to configure any of them after enabling IPM?

No need unless you find certain reductions are being applied and you want to rank them in an order applicable to your deployment. Like if you don't use the USB port, you can put that at the top.

You will need to verify that your switches support UPOE 60watts.

    >I have also tried on both 2960 and 9200 switches.

Some cisco switches ship in default 802.11at mode and need to enable higher POE in cli on each switch in stack if possible like on some 9300's.

I see this was resolved, we ran into a similar issue with our 515 and 535 model Aruba APs on Cisco 9300 switches. Sometimes, setting the switchport to a max of 30W instead of 60W actually helped, but we ultimately enabled IPM and the issue has not come back, even when deploying our newer 635s. I never found a root cause, but it wasn't the AP.  Glad you got it resolved.
