    We have been having an ongoing problem with apple laptops.  When the lid is closed, and the laptop moved to a new location it can take up to 5 minutes for the computer to reconnect.  I have been looking in AWMS and see that they were disconnected for several minutes bat can't get a reason why.   Any ideas?

    What are the ACLs in the user role?  There should be a rule allowing dhcp from any to any.  Any other combination like user any dhcp, will cause delays like you mention.

    We have seen (no real pattern) that sometimes Apple laptops either do not initiate DHCP, or try to use an address it had in the past (both the current network as well as others like a home network)

    Same behaviour on Windows machines (fast startup enabled) - it kind of "remembers" the old-ip address which is not valid on the new location. Instead of doing DHCP full dora-sequence, it just proposes the old ip-addr (DHCP server normally does NOT respond to that). We reduced the dhcp lease time (8h), that solves the issue when someone leaves in the evening & starts next day in another building (based on same SSID). But no solution when client moves quickly during day-time. 

    Takes +- 1.5min for the laptop to recover (at the end it starts doing DHCP dora-sequence). We had several simulations & packet captures before we identified this behaviour

    Actually, the DHCP client is supposed to send a DHCPREQUEST with its old address. The DHCP server is supposed to respond with a DHCPNACK.
    If the client gets no response from a DHCP server, the client is permitted to use its old address, assuming there is a DHCP server issue.

    If the client does not receive the DHCPNACK then troubleshooting should begin to resolve that issue.

    that was also our initial thought but : 

    according to RFC 2131 (DHCP) : chapter "3.2 Client-server interaction - reusing a previously allocated network address" - If the client's request is invalid (e.g., the client has moved to a new subnet), servers SHOULD respond with a DHCPNAK message to the client.

    We talked about this case with our DHCP guys (we're using Infoblox) and they say Infoblox will not sent a NAK in this case. Maybe other DHCP-servers might react different. So we have to live with it :(

    Try a packet capture. You'd need to determine where is appropriate (In the air, on the AP, on the controller, or somewhere upstream from the controller).

    If you are running Airwave, you should look at the Clarity data for that client to see how long it takes for each phase of the authenticaton/dhcp process.

    This is off the topic of DHCP but in relation to odd MacOS connectivity problems.... we were having difficulties with certain Mac clients intermittently losing connection.... Removing channel 149/153 from available channels on the controller had a good result. It's something to do with AWDL traffic. Good Luck!

    We had the same issue. We turned off channels 149 and 153 and the Mac devices works well. The version of the controllers is 8.10.0.4.

    We had similar issues (WiFi connection drops on MAC clients); engaged Aruba TAC, performed OTA capture and noticed that Apple MAC books (M1/M2) stop responding to request from AP. After Apple team is engaged about this issue, we are recommended OS upgrade to 13.1 or 12.6.2. So far no issues are reported.
