    Hi,

    I'm facing a recurring issue with an Aruba AP that is connected via PoE and dedicated for Carestream Focus 32 FPD (flat panel detector).

    • Problem: Initially the FPD gets full Wi-Fi signal (5–6 ft). But after 1–2 weeks, the Wi-Fi signal drops drastically. At 1 ft distance, the FPD shows no signal, and even at 1 inch distance, the signal is very weak.

    • History:

      • The same issue happened earlier. Supplier tried resetting the AP but could not fix it.

      • They eventually replaced the AP with a new one.

      • The new AP worked fine at first but now has developed the same problem again.

    • Supplier's explanation: They claim the AP is getting damaged due to poor grounding. My electrical grounding is measured between 1–10 Ω, which I believe is within normal limits. Also, there are no voltage fluctuation issues.

    • My concern: If grounding were truly the cause, I would expect random reboots, port damage, or complete device failure-not just progressive loss of Wi-Fi RF strength after 1–2 weeks. This feels more like a hardware defect (radio module degradation) or possibly a PoE power quality issue.

    Question:

    • Could grounding alone cause Aruba AP radios to degrade like this?

    • Has anyone experienced Aruba APs losing Wi-Fi transmit power over time while the device still powers on normally?

    • Should I look more into PoE stability or treat this as a hardware batch issue?

    Well,  if grounding is bad, you would typically see random reboots or lockups (from ESD discharge or transient spikes). Also possibly you could expect Ethernet/PoE port damage (PHY failures) or a total device failure (broken AP and not just weak Wi-Fi).  A slow, progressive drop in RF output power while everything else keeps running is not a classic grounding symptom. Your 1–10 Ω reading is within standard limits (NEC, IEEE, Aruba all recommend <25 Ω, ideally <5 Ω). From my perspective, grounding alone is not a plausible root cause here.

    Which types of AP are you using?  Check if you see some behaviors in Logs (either controller or central whichever ur using). Also, if they are PoE Powered, check if you have AP Voltage set right. Additional, check where you position the APs. Might be a chance that you have EMI Source close by (such as Carestream Power Supply or any XRay generator) because EMI could cause RF issues.

    Hi,

    thanks for your replay.

    there is no reboot or physical damage. Im using online ups so no voltes issue.

    AP is far from xray power generator. 

    AP model is 505. Not sure about controller.

    FW: 8.7.1.5.

    Is there any solution. Can this repairable i mean get back correct RF signal.

    Have you worked with HPE support team, and has the failing AP been submitted for root cause analysis?

    Any extreme environmental conditions?

    I agree that it seems unlikely that this is related to grounding issues.

    Hi Onno,

    There is no direct HP support in my region. no, there is no extreme environment condition. i can login to AP gui only. is it possible to fine anything there?

    There is no need for grounding of indoor APs, and unless your physical environment is very uncommon/extreme, you should not experience the problems you're describing.

    Assuming there was no channel and/or transmit power level change (what is the reported transmit power level?) , and the low power is consistently observed by different client devices, it seems likely that the hardware failed, and it should be replaced under warranty.

    I'm unfamiliar with the "Carestream Focus 32 FPD" device. Is there an independent way to verify the (drop in) RF signal level?

    Thanks for the clarification. The Aruba AP is only serving the Carestream Focus 32 FPD as a client, and from the AP GUI it shows this single client with very poor signal strength and low speed. Could you please advise the best method to independently verify the RF signal level - for example, would using a Wi-Fi analyzer app on a laptop/phone or a spectrum tool be appropriate in this case?

    Supplier forcing me to buy new AP even its still under warranty. they saying that AP got faulty due to bad grounding.. :( 

    is there any log available in AP find out the root cause? i have only GUI access.

    Yes, it should be possible to use a Wi-Fi analyzer app to at least get an indication of the signal strength, and if you use the same device at roughly the same location, it should be simple to confirm a drop as significant as the one you describe. Also, the GUI should be able to tell you if there was a channel and/or transmit power change.

    I don't think the GUI will be able to tell you much about the root cause, but again: unless this is a very uncommon deployment, grounding will not be the problem. Happy to discuss that with your vendor.

    Hello,

    Since we have GUI access to the AP, can you run and test the following commands? 

    GUI > support > command ;
    show aps power-monitor -> PoE class (af/at), limited mode / full power status.
    show aps -> General status of the AP.
    show tech-support -> Comprehensive diagnostics on a single page.
    show log arm -> ARM/TX-power setting history (check if power has dropped, if channel/tp has changed).
    show ap spectrum channel-details -> Noise/channel quality (confirm there is no interference).

    Review the following in the findings:
    The AP-505's radio EIRP/TX power value (5 GHz) appears to be ~15–21 dBm (excluding antenna gain, "conducted" ~+21 dBm max) according to typical regulations. If you see a "very low" value here (e.g., 0–3 dBm), the device may be intentionally restricted; look for the terms 'restricted' or "power-reduction."

    What channel is the AP currently broadcasting on?

    Hello everybody,

    I think I possibly have same kind of issue in two ap's (one 735 and one 734 with ANT311 both running 10.7.1.1 firmware) which just reported to me for second time. 
    AP's are installed late May this year and first issue report about having connection problems came about 1.5 months after that.
    I just noted from Central and access points RF page that while problem is on, noise floor has been weirdly low  (-99db) while after boot noise floor is more realistic (around -94db)

    I took tech-support files from ap before rebooting it so I think I will open up TAC for this

    1. How long has this deployment been in place with the original Access Point (was it a matter of been working fine for months, and then problem started occurring one day)?
    2. Are you the X-Ray tech that supports the FPD - goes onsite to said location to perform maintenance and support. (in other words, you don't have control over the RF environment) - as opposed to say the IT for said customer (hospital, athletic department, or small two room promptcare office, etc). 

    There might be something you can check, but it may be difficult depending on if you're a visiting tech of the affected site - or if you're the network engineer assisting the X-Ray tech that brought in this dedicated system.
