Aruba S1500 CAT 5 Cable don´t work with PoE AP

    Hi,

    i have a old Cisco Fast Ethernet PoE Switch and i have replace them with a
    Aruba S1500 48P.
    My Problem is now, wired AP with a CAT 5 Wire don´t work and got no Power.
    With the Cisco all runs good.
    I have reduce the Speed to 100 for this port but don´t help.
    On Port 5+7 are this AP after start there are visible at the Backend, but after some minutes there go
    off.

    Hi Gregor,

    • The Aruba S1500 supports;
      802.11.af 15.4W (PoE)
    • 802.11at 30W (PoE+)

    A Cat5 cable run can be 100 meter long, 802.11af use two pins, where 802.11at use four pins.

    • Some questions;
    • What type of AP, with what type of POE support?
    • Wat cable length?
    • What is the available Poe budget on the switch?

    Hi Marcel,

    Cable are max 15 meter long with 4 pair pins.
    I have connected only 4 AP, 2x Cisco 2702 and 2x 2602 in auto mode.
    One 2702 and 2602 works but other no.
    With the old Cisco Catalyst 2960-c all works with Fast Ethernet.
    PoE i have the default settings, i try also max. support
    It is possible that the crimping are bad? 
    That it works for the Cisco and not for the Aruba?
    This is the only thing what maybe different.

    Don't ring a bell to me. Crimping should be a very rare case i think, but you can always exchange cables to figure out any cable issues.
    Did you have LLDP / LLDP-MED enabled, maybe try this.

    Can you try the problematic AP with a short patch cable direct on the switch? If it works there, cabling may be the issue.

    Also, I'm not fully sure, but it may be that the default setting on the S1500 is PoE disabled on the port. But I assume you checked that (can't see it from the screenshots/information).

    Hi Herman,

    yes i have enabled all ports.
    I have test the Cable with a tester and looks good.
    With the Cisco Switch the AP works, so i thing not the cable.
    The Cable are only for CAT 5 and for outside installation.
    Speed is autodetect i reduce to 10Mbit but nothing helps.
    I check the Config of the AP

    Does your Cisco AP support the current PoE standards or only the older Cisco pre-standard PoE? I know of no non-Cisco switches that work with their pre-standard PoE.

    I think so, not all are not working.
    Only with the outside cable don´t work.

    I try a Huawei Switch i got this faulty message when i test the ports.

     Don´t know whats the problem, is this cable so bad for a Gigabit Switch?

    Looks like only 2 pairs are connected (4 wires out of 8); and some report 17m, others 0m (short-cut at the connector). Early ethernet standards allowed 4 wire cables.

    The cable looks bad to me. Could it be that you have a cross-cable?

    You may try to cut the connectors and replace/crimp them with new connectors to see if that improves the situation.

    One difference between a cable tester and normal use is that most cable testers check each individual line (1 connected to 1 on the other side, etc). Ethernet UTP works with twisted pairs, and most testers don't test if you actually have a pair on the right pins. But that is just an assumption.

    The cable test on the switch will give strange results sometimes when a device is connected to the other end.  I wouldn't give much value to those results.  As Herman said, the pairs matter too.  100Mb is much more forgiving than 1Gb on a bad cable.  The only way to truly trust the cable is to verify that it is wired to T568A or T568B specifications and certify the cable with a tester designed to test all parameters applicable for the cable type.  We have had some limited success using Cat5 cable with gigabit connections, but we always certify the cable to at least Cat5e.

    CAT 5 cable was only designed for up to 100 Mbit. CAT 5e was an interim for 1Gbit until CAT 6 was released.
    In other words, you need to replace the cable with CAT 5e or better.
