  • 1.  Assigning static IPs

    Posted Dec 27, 2022 05:13 PM
I enabled MAC authentication yesterday on our Aruba 7005. We are a small headquarters with only about 8 people in the building with one AP. My supervisor wants me to assign static IPs to our company laptops within the MAC user profiles. We have DHCP assigned IPs. We have no wired infrastructure at all and are a total cloud-based company (just to add as much detail as possible). Can I do this and is there documentation to help? Thanks!

assigning static IP address to your laptops has nothing to do with the controller configuration.
just go around and configure static IP address on the laptops, ensure that they are all in the same subnet/VLAN that is being reference by the Controller for that specific SSID.

Thank you for your response. I don't think I added enough detail. He's wanting me to assign them in the MAC authentication profile while still using DHCP on the laptops. (There is a line where you can assign static IPs. I left it blank.) I don't think that's a possibility, but I thought I would ask to see if I'm missing something. I'm new to the IT game so I'm learning every day, but that didn't make sense to me.

Sounds like he wants to you to use DHCP on the PC and do a MAC "reservation" in the DHCP server to the user with that MAC always gets the same IP.   If so this is done in the DHCP server not the controller configs.

If you use the controller as DHCP server, then there is no option to create DHCP reservations. You may use dhcp relay / ip helper to a centralized DHCP server get IP addresses allocated and the dhcp reservations.

MAC Authentication on the controller happens before the DHCP and these functions are not linked. DHCP in most deployments is done through an external DHCP server.
