    Hi,

What devices are connected on those ports?

STP is the Spanning Tree Protocol which prevents loops on your network.
If you were not using STP and something created a loop on your network (either your resilient design or someone connecting the same cable to a swtich twice) then it would probably cause your network to stop working.

You need to find what devices are connected on those switch ports and determine whether the loop is valid.

    in addition to Mohammeds post

All ports can potentially create a loop.
(think of two wall-outlets patched to one another!).

So When spanning-tree is enabled, potentially all ports need to participate in the spanning-tree protocol.
    Even client ports!
Every client on/of/rebooot/connect/disconnect can produce such a message.

you need to specifically configure the port not to participate in spnning-tree operation.

You can disable logging these on/of events on these ports.

Strange that three days ago the ports of some end points were blocked and noes were causing the network loop.
Example the point that a printer was connected blocked alone, after shutdown end no shutdown the port returned UP.

Sorry, I was reading your log the wrong way around! (I'm used to doing a "show log -r" :) )
That is normal behaviour, whenever a port goes offline and comes back online you will see in your logs

    - port X is now off-line
    - port X is Blocked by STP
    - port X is now on-line

That will happen even if you aren't running STP.

Ok! But see de log attached, port 2, 5 and 44, pleased!

    - the switch has stp active
    - a port comes up (=> the PC is switched on
    )
    - the switch does not know what's connected and if a loop has formed
    - so it initially puts the port in the STP blocked state
    I 09/20/10 11:30:53 00435 ports: port 2 is Blocked by STP
    - goes through listening and learning states
    - concludes there is no loop
    - unblocks the port (port is now on-line)
    I 09/20/10 11:30:55 00076 ports: port 2 is now on-line
    - the PC is shut down for the night
    I 09/20/10 17:43:48 00077 ports: port 2 is now off-line

    This is normal behaviour

I think the sequence that is being referred to is this:

    I 09/23/10 12:41:12 00435 ports: port 2 is Blocked by STP

    I 09/23/10 12:41:15 00076 ports: port 2 is now on-line

    I 09/23/10 12:42:28 00077 ports: port 2 is now off-line

The first two entries are normal as Pieter describes above.
The third entry occurs 45 seconds later which suggests to me that it's a client issue. There is also nothing in the logs to suggest that MSTP is disabling the port.
If you want to test that try disabling STP on that port and seeing if you still have an issue:

    # spanning-tree 2 admin-edge-port

    Hi,

i have the same error but "spanning-tree 12 admin-edge-port" does not solve. The port 12 on my setup is connected to VMWare device.

Try filter(s) with loop-protect.  Might help in your situation

span <port_list> admin-edge-port Makes port(s) an admin edge port. Used for connected to end devices.
span <port_list> pvst-protect Shuts <port_list> down the port if it receives a pvst bpdu.  Stays down for the  bpdu-protection-timeout period
span <port_list> bpdu-protection  Shuts <port_list> down the port if it receives a m/r/stp bpdu.  Stays down for the  bpdu-protection-timeout period
span bpdu-protection-timeout 600 Times out <port_list> with protection enable on them for 10 minutes
span <port_list> pvst-filter Stops the port from transmitting or receiving pvst bpdu’s. The port will continuously forward traffic. Useful for bridging devices
span <port_list> bpdu-filter Stops the port from transmitting or receiving m/r/stp bpdu’s. The port will continuously forward traffic. Useful for bridging devices
loop-protect <port_list> Will prevent loops from down stream switches as well
span trap errant-bpdu loop-guard new-root Sends a trap to server for every event listed

    Hi guys,

i have a question about this "Blocked by STP" - is this event log imposieble sent to e-mail inside my company?

    Thanks!

HP ProCurve 5400zl Switch Base System - The Spanning-Tree Port Parameters auto-edge-port, admin-edge-port and bpdu-protection Explained
    Information

This article discusses the Spanning-Tree port parameters auto-edge-port, admin-edge-port and bpdu-protection.

    Details

In the following example, switch Rack2sw1 is connected to the ProLiant server on port L1. The port is configured for the Spanning-Tree options, and the elapsed time before going into the forwarding state is displayed.

The configuration and verification associated with the diagram follows:

The default configuration for a port is “auto-edge-port.” The port will wait for 3 seconds to determine if any BPDU are received, before going into the forwarding state.

    Rack2sw2# show spanning-tree l1 detail | include Edge
      AdminEdgePort             : No
      Auto Edge Port            : Yes

    Rack2sw2(config)# interface l1 enable

    I 06/09/12 16:22:35 00435 ports: port L1 is Blocked by STP
    I 06/09/12 16:22:38 00076 ports: port L1 is now on-line

Three seconds pass before becoming on-line.

With “auto-edge-port” disabled, the port will go through the standard Spanning-Tree states of Blocking, Listening, Learning and Forwarding.

    Rack2sw2(config)# no spanning-tree l1 auto-edge-port

    Rack2sw2(config)# show spanning-tree l1 detail | include Edge
      AdminEdgePort             : No
      Auto Edge Port            : No

    Rack2sw2(config)# interface l1 enable

    I 06/09/12 16:27:05 00435 ports: port L1 is Blocked by STP
    I 06/09/12 16:27:25 00076 ports: port L1 is now on-line

Twenty seconds pass before becoming on-line.

With “admin-edge-port” enabled, the port will immediately go into the forwarding state.

    Rack2sw2(config)# spanning-tree l1 admin-edge-port

    Rack2sw2# show spanning-tree l1 detail  | include Edge
      AdminEdgePort             : Yes
      Auto Edge Port            : No

    Rack2sw2(config)# interface l1 enable

    I 06/09/12 16:32:13 00435 ports: port L1 is Blocked by STP
    I 06/09/12 16:32:13 00076 ports: port L1 is now on-line

    Immediately becomes on-line.

With “admin-edge-port” and “auto-edge-port” enabled, the port will immediately go into the forwarding state:

    Rack2sw2(config)# spanning-tree l1 auto-edge-port

    Rack2sw2(config)# show spanning-tree l1 detail | include Edge
      AdminEdgePort             : Yes
      Auto Edge Port            : Yes

    Rack2sw2(config)# interface l1 enable

    I 06/09/12 16:54:59 00435 ports: port L1 is Blocked by STP
    I 06/09/12 16:54:59 00076 ports: port L1 is now on-line

    Immediately becomes on-line.

NOTE: When using “admin-edge-port” it is recommend to also configure “bpdu-protection”. This option disables the port if an unauthorized switch is plugged into the port.

    Rack2sw2(config)# spanning-tree l1 bpdu-protection

    Rack2sw2(config)# show spanning-tree l1 detail | include Edge|Protection
      BPDU Protection           : Yes
      AdminEdgePort             : Yes
      Auto Edge Port            : Yes

The following is a sample log file output that occurs when BPDUs are received on a port configured for BPDU protection.

    I 06/09/12 17:08:19 00840 stp: port L1 disabled - BPDU received on protected
                port.
    I 06/09/12 17:08:19 00898 ports: BPDU protect(5) has disabled port L1
    I 06/09/12 17:08:19 00077 ports: port L1 is now off-line

I have an issue with My AP's being blocked by STP. I work for a University and we have found in past instances that students will bridge thier NIC's (Wired and Wireless) thinking they will get faster connections. This is the reason we turned spanning tree on. Is there a way to make sure that the port with the AP always takes priority or that it never gets blocked?
