Hello everyone,

I am currently configuring an HPE OfficeConnect 1620 24G Switch (JG913A) and encountering an issue with console login permissions.

I created a new local user (e.g., 'peter') through the Web GUI. I assigned the user to the 'Management' level and checked the available service types (Web, SSH, etc.).

While I can successfully log into the Web GUI using this new account, I cannot log into the switch via the physical Console port (using terminal emulators like Tera Term). The console login consistently fails for this new user.

 

Observations:

1. The default admin account can log into the console without any issues.

2. I noticed that on the Web GUI "Add Local User" page, there is no checkbox for "Terminal" or "Console" under the 'Service-type' section (only Web, FTP, Telnet, LAN-access, and SSH are visible).

So my questions are:

1. Is there any way to grant physical Console access to a newly created local user on the HPE 1620 switch series?

2. Or is the console port strictly locked to the default admin account by design on this specific smart-managed model?

 

If there is a workaround or a specific CLI command to bind console access to new users, please let me know.

Any guidance would be greatly appreciated!

Short answer: on the 1620 that's by design. This series is built to be managed from the web GUI, and the console gives you a deliberately small command set meant mostly for initial setup. The missing Terminal checkbox on the Add Local User page is the tell: the platform doesn't expose console access as a grantable service type for local users, which is exactly why your new account works for web and SSH but not the serial port. On full Comware you'd fix this with service-type terminal on the local user; the 1620 doesn't give you that knob.

So nothing's broken and there's no hidden setting to find. Keep the default admin for console work and give the new account web and SSH, which cover everything this switch can actually be configured to do anyway.

One caution since it comes up: the 1910 and 1920 have a well known hidden full-CLI unlock, but I'm not aware of an equivalent on the 1620, so I wouldn't burn time chasing that path. Also, this landed on the Developer board; the Comware board is where the OfficeConnect crowd hangs out, worth a repost there if you want more eyes.
