Dear Experts, 

I have a customer setup running for over 8 months. Approx 2-3 weeks ago they complained that after successful login, the android devices are not redirecting to their public homepage. They have tested on Apple and PC, both are redirecting but not Android. 

I have done this type of setup many many times, i have videos of myself doing the same thing (so that if there is a poc requirement i dont forget any step, you know, just to be on the safe side :)). I have compared my steps, everything is exactly i used to do but in my lab also Android is not redirecting anymore!!. I dont recall installing any update on my android.

Any idea if there is really something i have still missed? please note its working perfectly fine on PC and Apple. (Public certificates are used) Android is also working fine except it doesnt redirect after succesful login.

Is this happening to all Androids or just a certain Android? Which version of Android is facing this issue?

Android devices and their Captive Portal Detection mechanism use a background request to check for internet access (they will ping connectivitycheck.gstatic.com). Once the check is successful , it closes the login window without triggering the original redirect. This is now by design in Most cases where i have noticed this is on Android 11+ and especially in 12/13/14. The captive portal opens → user logs in → Android detects internet → login window closes → no redirect to your homepage.

This affects any setup that relies on Android captive portal browser doing a 302 redirect to a specific page after login. So, easier to say that Android has killed the expected behavior.

Try blocking the connectivitycheck.gstatic.com
