Hi experts,

I am wondering if when clients connects to an AP, they use the same data rate for uplink and downlink or they can be different. Let's say the client is far from the AP. The AP has high transmit power and therefore the client gets a good downlink SNR, but because the client has low transmit power, the AP gets a bad uplink SNR.

Because of this, could the downlink use a high MCS index and therefore to get a high data rate and the uplink use a low MCS index and therefore to get a low data rate? Or by contrast do the uplink and downlink have to use the same MCS index and therefore to have the same data rate?

Different rates.

Use 

show ap debug client-table ap-name <name of ap>

to see the current transmit and receive rates for each client connected to an AP.  The client and AP negotiate different rates for uplink and downlink based on the environment.
