    Hello everyone!

    Quick question.
    +
Is it theoretically possible that an aerial multi-mode fibre optic cable could become saturated with sunlight and cause scattering?

This is new profile for me on the ITRC but I give points to everyone. Thanks!!

I do not think so. Any FO cable is insulated, coated and so on. Plus the wavelength are quite different... But then again, maybe I am wrong.

If you have problems with a FO cable, I would rather look at the way the fiber is mounted (tight loops can cause signal loss), splices and so on.

Theoretically it is possible, but depends on how much sun incidence is caught by the cable.

Can't you assure the sunlight not to be directly caught by the fiber?

Sun light by itself can't do much damage, but the temperature of the cable might, but not likelly.

Fiber Optics cables protection is sufficient against that.

Think of it like this, what passes inside the cable? Light. The sun itself produces light beams. Fiber Optics cables can use the sunlight beams to transport light. So like i said the sunlight itself won't cause damage.

Anyway i'm not an expert on this subject.

    Hope this helps

I wish I was only half as smart as you guys....

The only reason I asked [beyond personal curiosity] was I have a fibre run that goes about 2000'. Previously about half of this run was on a passenger tramway [aerial] the rest was in the ground...

Then due to construction we had to add a "temp" drop to our MDF over some bean poles. about 500'.

When we setup the new fibre run it was dark and cloudy... and everything worked great. They put an OTDR on it and it looked like everything was perfect.

Then.... the next day [sunny as it often is in Colorado] it stopped working. But as soon as it gets a little stormy the connection dies and the cycle repeats.

Soooo when talking to my cohorts I mentioned something about sunlight [solar flares, alien spaceships, excuses basically] and everyone thought I was crazy.

In any case thanks a ton guys!!

If I were you, I would redo all measurements during a period when it does not work. Still, I would bet my money on splices.
