Folks,

Can anyone give me a simple walkthrough of an LLDP-MED setup for VoIP phones?

Basically, I want the handsets to configure/request DHCP from the VoIP VLAN, VLAN 190, where a custom DHCP server is listening.

All I need. It's not a complex system. :)

I assume you have a phone which supports LLDP-MED and you have a ProCurve switch like the 2610, 2910, 3500 or 5400. In that case it's simple.

create vlan 190 with the command voice and tag the ports both uplink and phoneport with vlan 190.

syntax

switch(config)#vlan 190 voice

switch (vlan-190)#tag 1-12, 24
or any range you like

Now plug in the phone. The phone should configure it self in vlan 190 and get appropriate qos settings.

check if the phone got the LLDP-MED settings

let say the phone is on port 2

#sh lldp info remote-device 2

Worked great...

But OOPS! My Linksys handsets are Cisco, so LLDP-MED is not supported.

I really, really loathe Cisco.

Just to add, newer Cisco Phones (with FW update) are LLDP-MED compatible.

Are you sure about that?

I downloaded the 6.1.5a firmware (the latest as of last month) for the Cisco/Linksys SPA942 handset, which we are trying to deploy, and LLDP-MED is not working at all.

The config example above works great for the Aastra handsets, however. So I know it's configured properly.

What I've done is create a tftp server on the default VLAN and have it give the handset an XML file with the VLAN configuration. Once the handset gets the config and reboots, it's on the correct VLAN.

Why oh why does Cisco do this to me? First they have phones that advertise as 802.3af compliant when they aren't, and now I find that they have their most popular handset still cling to CDP...

Well, at least Cisco 7961 and 7911 are LLDP-MED compatible...
