  • 1.  How to extend a wireless network (any repeators)

We are using Aruba Wireless in our environment and it is working very well.

One of our office is a warehouse area where the use wireless hand held devices to scan inventory with bar codes.  Well a new situation has developed, we will need to follow specific procedures when unloading equipment into Semi-Truck trailers.

I guess the staff will need to scan the inventory after the equipment has been paced on the truck.  I am hoping that the Wireless Signall will spread adequately into the Semi-Truck trailer; but, I want to plan for a back up situation.  This office we will have 20 different Truck Delivery Bays and potentially many different trailers coming and going.  My question is,

Are there any wireless repeaters or anything else that I can use, from Aruba Wireless to extend the Signal from one area and direct it to another?

Or does anyone have any other suggestions on how to extend a wireless signal from an existing wireless access point and help spread the WiFi coverage to a specific area.

Sounds like you should either look into deploying some of the APs as Mesh APs, or you could use two AP-387s to extend as a wireless bridge.

    Stavros,

    1. How many of those x20 bays do you anticipate active at a time?
    2. Is your budget for this "Quick and Dirty" or "Do It Right"?
    3. I assume your concern is the signal not reaching inside of the trailer?

    Thanks,

    Brad

Signal reach inside the trailer.  Then remove the reach if possible.

What would be perfect, is something where I can move it to different locations. Like a wireless beacon; but I am not sure if that available.

Or perhaps use a n outdoor AP with an antenna that i can point to a specific direction.  What do you guys suggest?

Mr. DB86. can you explain what a wireless bridge would do?

1).  Perhaps 5 at a time; but, we can start out with a proof of concept.

2).  Our budget is to do it quick and dirty.
           a.  Perhaps  start out with a proof of concept first and then see from there.

    I appreciate your help.

    Stavros,

One other question, what is the security on the network you would be extending into the trailers for the scanners to use (dot1X, PSK, open, etc)?

    Thanks,

    Brad

    Stavros,

Cheap, Quick, and VERY, VERY, VERY Dirty..... The Extender and Inverter pictures are not mine, just screen shots from the internet.

    Thanks,

    Brad

    Pros

    ----

A quite Cheap, Quick, and VERY, VERY, VERY Dirty solution

                    - Can scale this (with much greater cost) up to an Aruba AP w/ Directional Panel Antenna

centered behind each pair of trailers and eliminate the PEs

    Highly Portable

Set PE on floor of trailer entry with view down length of trailer and to the Aruba AP

Use of cheap WiFi (3rd Party) extender

Get WiFi service on the dock for other uses too

    Cons

    ----

Extenders can usually only extend up to PSK networks

                    - No consideration of 2FA

    No consideration for weather

                    - Maybe a plastic container with a snap-on lid

    Battery life / Run time

                    - Have spare inverters charging for swapping

    Ideas

    -----

    - If you can get an AC extension cord to the entry of the trailer, can eliminate the Inverter

    - Height of Aruba AP mounting dependent on obstructions on the dock

    - With the inverter eliminated (via ext cord power), the extender could be clipped or suction

cuppped to the inside roof of the trailer (just inside of the door)
