I'm trying to set up a wireless network between 2 computers that have Windows XP Home. One is a brand new HP with the service pack 1 installed. The other is a Sony with no SP installed. The Linksys Wireless USB Network Adapter won't install on the HP. It will install the software, but I can't use the hardware. I used the add new hardware wizard to manually add it, but the computer restarts and I can't install it. I plugged it into my computer (with no SP1) and it worked perfectly, but I need the network adapter on the HP. Please help.

What is the complete model information of your HP?

What version is your WUSB11? If it's version 2.0, get the firmware upgrade from http://www.linksys.com/download/firmware.asp?fwid=19

Is your WUSB11 driver version 1.2.2.55? If not, get the driver from http://www.linksys.com/download/driver.asp?dlid=51&osid=6

    HTH!

The HP is a 774e and the WUSB11 is version 2.5. When I set it up manually, it gets to the point where it's looking for a .sys file. It finds the file in the setup cd and in the windows directory, but no matter which one I choose, the installation fails. It says the name is already used as a service, or something like that.

The article doesn't help because there is an error in the installation and it can't continue.

I installed the new drivers, but it still doesn't work. It says there is an error: "The name is already in use as either a service name or a service display name." I don't know what this means and the only option is to cancel the installation.

Roger, Do you even have a clue or know about computers? no offense, but I notice all your post to other people question, All you do is send them to a link where any monkeys can even do.

Is that how you get the points? then you are pretty bright.

    Hey Billy:

If any monkey can do it, why do you suppose that technique solves so many computer problems? Why don't you go find something to do. I'm not interested in your opinion and I rather suspect that very few are.

Roger, please dont take it so seriously. I repect you for taking the time help out others & like me who dont have a wide knowledge of computer. Isn't true that you just take people question and you do a search for them reply back to their post and here's the link.
again that's really what monkey do.

    J/k roger

Billy, since you sound so sincere, I'll tell you the answer to your question from another thread (and I won't even refer you somewhere elese). To get the MAC address of your NIC (depending on which version of Windows), go to DOS/Command Prompt and issue WINIPCFG or IPCONFIG /ALL or (for WINXP) GETMAC command.

    Jeffrey:

If you're still having trouble, I'd like to help. I couldn't find a 774e computer on HPs website? I have heard of problems on HP systems with XP SP1.

It would be helpful if you could post the exact error message.

I apologize for the distracting dialog with Billy.

    Same problem here!

Notice that the hardware designation increments each time you install/uninstall the drivers and plug in the adapter.

"Instant Wireless USB Netwoprk Adaper ver. 2.5 #4"

Anyone have a fix for this yet?

It works now. When I installed the drivers, I checked "have disk" and somehow it worked. Thanks for the help. I would have replied earlier, but I forgot.

I ran across these e-mails while searching for a resolution to a similar problem I had. I had a Linksys LNE100TX network card installed, and I upgraded from Windows 98 SE to Windows XP.

I began to get the message "Error occurred while installing this device. The name is already in use as either a service name or a service display name." Sometimes when I would try to delete the device, I would get a message saying it will not let me uninstall the card because it is needed to boot the system. At other times I was able to uninstall the card, but the next boot would find and reinstall the card with the error message.

Linksys technical support was no help. They ran me through the usual checklist for dummies, and when none of that worked, they decided to tell me it was an IRQ conflict and to contact the computer manufacturer.

Anyhow, I found a Knowledge Base Article # 265409 at Microsoft that addressed a similar problem, and it worked. The MS KB article specifically addresses a Hewlett Packard printer, but the description and resolution applied to the Linksys LNE100TX.

    I found a registry entry in "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services"
that was identified as LNE100TX. After I deleted the registry item, I was able to go to Control Panel - System - Hardware - Device Manager and uninstall the card. When I restarted the PC, it found the correct drivers, installed them, and it is working.
