It is possible to use Mini-GBIC modules from other vendors with ProCurve equipment?
    For example: D-Link DEM-331T(R) with ProCurve 3500yl-24G

It's generally not possible. Most new ProCurve equipment checks to make sure genuine ProCurve mini-GBICs are in use.

You can find a support matrix here:

    http://www.hp.com/rnd/support/faqs/mini-GBICs.htm

Generally if it supports "A" versions mini-GBICs, third party ones will probably also work.

In this case, the 3500yl requires ProCurve B or C version mini-GBICs.

As Matt explained, it is possible in some cases but is it really worth it? I can see all kinds of issues trying to get support in that scenario.

    But just my 2 cents..

    Joel,

    Moscow price:
    ProCurve Gigabit-LH-LC Mini-GBIC - $4700
    D-Link DEM-331 - $300

The DEM-331T is only an LX, not an LH.

Yes, certainly, but ProCurve does't make WDM Mini-GBICs. We rent only one optical fibre between buildings. :-(

Just for grins, attached is a magic decoder for "works" vs "supported" in HPspeak.

If there is some functionality you need from a ProCurve that isn't available from HP, do please let them know via more official channels. If enough folks ask for the same thing then there is a chance HP may start offering it.

If there is a lower but still decent number of people asking for it (and I am simply _wildly_ speculating and making _no_ promises) a third party reference situation will arise.
