  • 1.  Mounting AP on wall

    Hi,

Due to cabling issue, we are unable to mount the AP to ceiling. In such case, should I just mount the AP on wall or should I use a 90 degree bracket to let the AP facing the ground. The room is small and that AP is dedicated for this room. Therefore, the coverage and roaming will not be a consideration.

I know that the signal may penetrate the nearest floor due to the RF pattern if mouing on wall directly. If using 90 degree bracket, will the RF be impacted?Since half of the AP is nearly 'stick to' the wall.I wonder if the signal be absorbed/ reflected by wall Our main concern is the performance in that room only. The height of bracket mounting will be slightly lower, around 2 meters. Thanks so much for your advice.

in your context, you can use either, in the past I had wall mounted them with no issues.

It depends on your density, but I would use something like Aruba Utilities for Android or survey software to determine your coverage from that single device where it is placed.  I have seen situations where mounting the access point on the wall, provides little to no coverage in front of that AP when there is no overlapping coverage.  If you have overlapping coverage you should be fine, but if you do not it could be unpredictable and weak.  They were designed for ceiling mounting so "measure twice" and cut once.  If this is a one-off, I don't see a problem.  If it is not, your coverage, roaming and performance could certainly become uneven due to unintended coverage patterns.

The RF energy will be absorbed by many things, and reflections can play into your coverage and SNR.  I say try it "wall mounted" and test your results.  Then mount it horizontally and test.  Compare the results and install it which ever way works better.

Agreed. A third option would be to use external antennas (if the AP model supports it), and attach simple dipole stick antennas (oriented vertically and all in parallel) to a wall mounted AP. Not an option currently when using 6E AP models..

I am assuming you have an omnidirectional AP that you are using in this scenario. That being said, 2 meters ~ 6 feet off the ground isn't ideal in this situation for a right angle bracket, or a flat wall mount. It's at the height where people may want to set something on it, and unless there's a piece of furniture blocking walking up next to it, someone may accidentally bump their head into it.

I'm not sure the exact cabling issue you are running into, but if possible I would say try to get it as high to around 3 meters ~ 9 to 10 feet as possible, then do a right angle bracket to better support the room. You say it is a small room, so I doubt you'll have any issues providing proper coverage in the space.

Don't over think it, if you have time plug and play.

Let me know if you have any further questions!
