I have a R3000Z series laptop that I bought about 6 months back. It has a Realtek ethernet card that I used to (successfully) connect to my router (Cable Internet) till now.

For the last two days, I have been getting "Network Cable Unplugged" notifications at random points of time. I noticed that in general, I could connect to the internet for atleast 10 mins once I switch on my laptop. But after a random period of time, it simply pops up this notification ... when I have changed nothing - neither shifted my computer around nor changed any software settings. And ofcourse, I cannot use any internet resource - http or ftp or smtp... nothing.

I read on a forum somewhere else that someone had a similar issue and solved it by setting pin 1 on the RJ 45 connector right - it had been stuck in the up position. I checked mine - all the pins look great.

I have tried using the cable that I use on a different laptop - it worked. So the problem is most certainly with the ethernet card.

Could someone find a solution to this ? Please .... I am in the midst of hectic grad school which is why I cannot afford the time to send it to compaq for repair.

    Sundaram,

Am I correct in saying that you are using a removeable ethernet card plugged into the pc-card slot on the left side of the notebook? It's possible that your Realtek card is overheating, it wouldn't be the first time that an external card did that.

Is there a reason that you aren't using the built-in network connection on the right side of the computer? It is 10/100.

    I hope this helps.

    Good Luck - Tim
