Wireless Access

Have just installed a WL210 into a Compaq EVO D500 running Win2000 SP2. Trying to communicate to a WL400 Access Point. Have two older PC?s of different flavours with older WL200 cards communicating with same Access Point without problems!
All drivers look happy, network connector is enabled, and excellent signal strength reported but I still have a big red cross through my network connection icon ? Unplugged cable?
Have tried shifting Wl210 to a different PCI slot. Tried running supplied PCI card enabler software but that only works with SP1. Have tried disabling all encryption. All to no avail.
Anyone out there with any ideas?

Panic over! Use the PCI Enabler on SP19445. Works with Win2000 SP2.

I have the same problem. I have 17 evo d500 with win2k sp2. Using a WL510 access point. With the wl 210 PCI and wl 110 pcmcia card. At first start none of the pcs would see the access point, all of them said cable disconnect. After installing the latest drivers for the wl210 (SP18648) and for the wl 110 (sp21342) now 12 machines are working. Tried doing what was mentioned above installing sp19445. After the first reboot the card saw the hub. But after the 2nd reboot it does not. Spent about 5 hrs on the phone with compaq tech support and nobody there has any experience or expertise on the wireless products

The trick is to definitely run that PCI Enabler software contained in SP19445. Failing that I would shift my WL210 into a different PCI slot. There seems to be quite a bit of bully on problems with PCI cards not working in certain slots, I think it's the one closest to the motherboard that causes grief....? You may need to run that PCI Enabler patch again..? I was surprised to hear that you got a connection on the first boot up but not on any subsequent boots? Try to manually disable/enable network connection. Best of luck!

After working with someone at Compaq who actually had knowledge of the wireless products, we swapped out every part, including harddrives, wireless cards, pci cards. Finally we decided that the system board was at fault. After swapping out the system board and applying the patches everything worked. We eventually replaced 4 system boards and are now 100% functioning (though a 20% failure rate right out of the box does not instill confidence.

Just for the interest sake. One day after finally getting our three WL210?s working, the client rang up to inform me that one of their users couldn?t connect to the server.
To cut a long story short it turned out to be a dead WL210 PCI card. The symptoms of this fault are when booting up the PC appears to hang at the ?Preparing Network Connections? dialog window. After about 10min you finally get to the Login prompt.

I am certainly glad it worked to start with! It would drive a man to drink trying to get faulty gear to work from scratch!
