Wireless Access

Last night my wireless adaptor disappeared. I used the chat option and went through four sessions, downloading updated BIOS and replacing driver..no success. My amber light is still present and no device shown in device manger. Hp say I need to restore to factory setting but i do not want to do this. My notebook is out of warranty and i need it for work. should i have the wireless card replaced. or better yet can i do it myself?

My computer was out of warranty, and they are trying to charge me $259!!!!
