    AOS 8.10.0.19

    ClearPass 6.12.6

This is really a client issue so I'm chancing my arm posting here, I know it's a bit of a long-shot, but just in case anyone has seen similar.

We run an mPSK IoT SSID using ClearPass MAC registration for the devices. One of the university departments has invested in a product called LabEye which runs off a bunch of Raspberry Pi Zeros. They, of course, didn't check whether this gubbins would work on the IoT SSID before buying it... and it seems like it doesn't want to connect. But I would like to try to get some answers as to why it doesn't seeing as it seems odd that a Pi wouldn't be able to connect. There are no signs that the Pis are even associating with the AP, and there is nothing in the ClearPass logs to suggest that they are attempting MAC auth. Airwave does have a record of them appearing once, for 0 seconds, a few weeks ago, but zilch since. They sent some logs from their end:

Is there anything in there that gives an indication of what is going on? I see 'Activation: (wifi) association took too long, failing activation'. They have given me the config they are using so if that is useful I can post that too. We don't require Management Frame Protection on this SSID.

I have multiple Raspberry Pi connected to my Aruba WLAN (AOS10, but had AOS 8 in the past), including a Pi Zero. These devices are 'normal Linux' devices and I would not know why these devices won't connect. MPSK suggests that you configured WPA2-PSK-AES for the authentication. While I have not seen MAC randomization on Raspberries, it may be if the Linux version is specific or very recent, it does randomize the MAC.

Based on your description, I would not expect issues; and it may need further investigation. Probably, as I responded late, you already did some further testing. Did you make any progress?

    Thanks Herman,

Useful to know it should be possible. These are lab camera devices (from an outside company), so I don't know how much customisation has been done. We are in contact with them and they seem a bit unsure about whether MAC randomisation is on or not, and the fact we don't see anything in the ClearPass logs does suggest maybe they are using a different MAC, so that seems to be a likely culprit at the moment. I've been on leave so no progress so far, but I'll update this when we have any news.

I have also checked my RPi devices and have not seen a MAC randomisation.

    Thanks Ariya,

That's useful info, we will struggle on and hopefully find a resolution. It is always difficult to troubleshoot from a distance.
