Wireless Access

Apologies for the slight duplication (I have already posted this in the Multi-function colour printer section), but I thought that someone in this section of the forum may be able to help (and I'm desperate).

As there appears to be a restriction on the length of posts, I will stick this up in 2 parts.

Here is part 1:

I am having some serious problems getting my HP photosmart 2710 printer to work. My new wireless card in my PC also does not work and I'm not sure if the two things are related. I have tried to give as much detail as possible in this post in the hope that someone may be able to help.

You guys seem to know the answer to just about everything HP related, so I hope you can help with this.

Problem in a nutshell:

I am having the following problems:
- I am constantly getting the following error messages:
1. Generic Host Process for Win 32 Services - Data Execution Prevention Error";
2. svchost.exe - application error - "the instruction at "0x009a96bc" referenced memory at "0x00000000". The memory could not be written"; and
- my PC will not connect to my router using the wireless card (although it seems to work okay when connected through the Ethernet cable) - this problem may be linked to my printer.


Background:

I have had my PC for a couple of months and last week bought the following:
- Netgear WAG311 wireless pci adaptor - http://www.netgear.com/products/details/WAG311.php ;

My first attempt at installing all of the above resulted in the error messages referred to above. I did a few searches on the Web and found several posts on different forums recounting problems people were having connecting HP wireless printers to their PCs. People seemed to be having exactly the same problem when trying to install their HP printer wirelessly to a router. The problem appears to be one with HP’s driver software (please see the section below entitled “Posts in relation HP Printer problems”).

I therefore concluded that the reason for these error messages must be a problem with the printer software.

However, what I overlooked is the fact that the PC was not connecting wirelessly to the router (I’ll talk more about this below).

I spoke briefly with HP Support in the UK and they said that they were unaware of any problems and that I should try uninstalling the software and then re-installing it and see if I get the same problem. Based on the fact that people mentioned that they had been told to do the same thing in their posts (without any success), I did not hold out much hope of getting rid of the error messages.

So I uninstalled the wireless pci adaptor card (and removed it from the pci slot), the wireless router and the printer so that I could start again.

Last night the following happened:
- First, I re-connected my router to my PC using the Ethernet cable (at this stage the PC did not have a wireless card in it and, as mentioned above, I couldn't get the router and wireless card to connect to each other when originally trying to do this anyway) - by the way, I did not enable any WAP encryption;
- I then re-installed the printer's software and to my great surprise it seemed to work - I had none of the error messages mentioned before!
- However, I thought this was too good to be true and it was: when I reinstalled the software for the wireless card and plugged it back in the blasted "svchost.exe application errors" and "Data Execution Prevention Error" messages re

And here is Part 2:

Last night the following happened:

So although everything seemed to work fine when the router was connected by Ethernet cable to the PC (i.e. the printer communicated wirelessly with the router without any error messages), there seems to be a problem when I install the wireless card (even though the wireless card still doesn't actually connect to the router).

So I am now wondering to what extent the error messages are a combination of the HP printer and the wireless card having compatibility problems (whether with Windows Service Pack 2, each other or something else) or whether it is just the wireless card that is the guilty party (although this seems unlikely given all of the problems everyone else are suffering with HP software).

I noticed a reference when installing the WAG311 software to Microsoft hotfix Q815485. This only seems to be applicable to PCs without Service Pack 2 and only when using WAP encryption. I have not installed this hotfix (indeed when I tried to install it to see whether it would have any effect, I was told that I couldnâ t because I already have Service Pack 2 installed).

I then did a search on google for â netgearâ and â hotfix Q815485â and found various comments which appeared to be saying that there are compatibility problems between Service Pack 2 and Netgear wireless cards.

Summary:

This all leaves me slightly confused because:

1. on the one hand: people appear to be having problems getting Netgear wireless adaptors to work with Windows Service Pack 2 (although, I have not seen any references in relation to the netgear problems to "svchost.exe application" and "Data Execution Prevention" error messages (i.e. the error messages I have been getting)); and

2. on the other hand: I have seen plenty of reports of HP wireless printers generating persistent error messages of the type I am getting (again, please see the section below entitled â Posts in relation HP Printer problemsâ ).

I toyed with the idea of uninstalling Windows Service Pack 2 but got a message saying that lots of software may stop working if I do (it seemed to mostly be a list of software that I have installed since installing Service Pack 2).

My computer

- My PC (which I bought very recently is a Dell Dimension XPS - http://www1.euro.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx?c=uk&cs=ukdhs1&id=dimen_xps&l=en&s=dhs
- I installed Windows Service Pack 2 soon after buying it
- Finally (and I don't know whether this should make any difference to any of the above), at the moment I do not have ADSL broadband connected - so the router is not connected to the Internet (I will get connected at the end of next week).

I ran into the same problem...very frustrating....anyway...I think this will fix it...try it and let me know....

run command
msconfig

go to Startup

disable HPWuSchd2 by taking the check off of the check box.

Hit OK

Restart
ignore dialog box at restart


I spent 4 hours on this....I hope it works...it would be good to see if it solves your problem...solved errors.

Hopefully a patch will be sent out.
