Folks,

I have two ProCurve switches that have PoE capabilities:

5412ZL-96G
2610-48-PWR

Both are running very current firmware (last updated on Feb 20th).

I have 40 Linksys SPA-942 handsets that are supposedly 802.3af compliant devices that refuse to power-on on either of these switches.

I know PoE is working because I have an Aastra 57i handset that immediately activates upon being connected.

These Linksys phones, despite being made by Cisco, are listed as 802.3af compliant. I've been unable to find anybody else reporting this problem. Our integrator uses Netgear PoE switches to power these Linksys phones without any custom configuration.

What are we doing wrong?

I think linksys PoE device to procurve PoE switch have fristly autonegotiation issue

not to be complated autonegotiation between both device
in conclusion we can see some issue (PoE issue,packed drop issue etc.)

example test

connect linksys device on procurve PoE device
with utp straight true patch cable for example int 17
set up int 17 mdix mode and speed-duplex settings

(eth-17)# mdix-mode mdix
(eth-17)# speed-duplex 100-full

and make linksys device ethernet port setup 100 full

test now PoE operation

I did as you instructed and reconfigured the port settings.

Unfortunately, that did not solve the problem.

To add insult to injury, I tested my two new Polycom IP6000 conferencing systems that are PoE-powered as well. They work perfectly on both switches.

This really, really makes me want to send back these Linksys phones.

can you see any log on linksys connection switch port or on linksys device

I went into the 5400zl's even log and retrieved the following. I assume this is what you are asking for:

W 03/19/09 08:51:11 00564 ports: port A17 PD Invalid Signature indication.

That seems to happen whenever I plug the Linksys handset in. A quick Google search shows that this means a non-802.3af device was plugged in. That is strange, because the Linksys phone is advertised as 802.3af compliant...

just curious to know about this PD incompatibility...

There is something called "pre standard detection" which when enabled is supposed to handle PD's which are not Standards compliant......

use power-over-ethernet pre-std-detect command on 5400 switch and make test
