Can you share how your prompt looks like? And the output of the command: 'show session-list'?
If you are in operator level (prompt>), use the command: 'enable' to get in manager level (prompt#). In manager level you can go into configuration mode.

Can you share the CLI output, before and including that error?
It may be that you need to go in 'enable' mode before you can enter conf t; or you are logged in with operator credentials, not manager.
