Thank you for a prompt response.

This AP has been on the network for several months.
I have over 100 AP's provisioned,, so i believe it would be a career ending move to "clear provisioning-ap-list". because then every provisioned AP gets wiped out.

I believe the correct move would be to enter (on the controller)
    provision-ap
    read-bootinfo 10.181.x.x
(the AP with IP Address 10.181.x.x will spit out its provisioning info.) There will be only one AP waiting to be provisioned.

    Then I will enter
    copy-provisioning-params ip-addr 10.181.x.x
I expect the Controller will ask me to enter
    AP Name
    (enclose in double quotes)
    AP Group
    FQDN

    Now I enter this command
    show provisioning-params

And the controller spits out the new parameters

    Then I enter
    reprovision ip-addr 10.181.x.x

And the expected output will be the AP name will no longer be in double quotes.

Do I have the procedure correct ?
Most importantly,, I believe it would be wrong for me to
    clear provisioning-ap-list
because I have over 100 properly provisioned AP's

    clear provisioning-ap-list

This clears you out of a previous provisioning session for multiple APs, if you had one.  You can select more than one AP to provision and that command would clear that selection, if you made it previously. You DO NOT have to execute  clear provisioning-ap-list.  https://www.arubanetworks.com/techdocs/ArubaOS_85_Web_Help/Content/arubaos-solutions/1cli-commands/prov-ap.htm?Highlight=clear%20provisioning-ap-list

You ONLY have to change the NAME and then reprovision (AP will reboot, of course).  Read-bootinfo reads all the parameters in and makes all the same parameters the ones it will write when you reprovision.
