  • 1.  Recommended Aruba Switch model for Aruba Access Points?

    Posted Jan 03, 2023 05:14 AM
    Hello,

regarding the connection of Aruba Access Points to Aruba PoE switches, does anyone know if there are there recommended Switch models for certain model AP's? In particular for the following 2 AP models:

HPE Aruba AP-635 (RW) - Campus AP
HPE AP-270-MNT-H3 AP-270 Series Outdoor AP

I am not sure, but I would suppose that as long as the switches were equipped with PoE ports and sufficient port speed, it probably wouldn't matter which model is chosen. In any case the  switches would need to be a mix of 24 and 48 Ports.

    Many thanks
    Paul B

    Hi Paul,

Most important thing is that you look at the datasheets of the power requirements of your Access Points and calculate the available PoE budget of the switch.

The AP-635 will run on 802.3at (class 4) PoE with IPM feature disables it will disable the USB port. With IPM enabled it will bootup in unrestricted mode but dynamicly apply restrictions depends on the IPM settings.

Not sure why choice for a AP270 but this one will run with 802.3at as well.

So in shortterm, any 802.3.at switch can be uses when there is no need for the USB interface of the AP-635.

Most Aruba switches have 370watt PoE budget and can rougly run around 10 APs. If you have more AP's per switch then you can choice for a 740watt model our simple add a second switch.

For the right switch choice you also have to look at required switch features like Stacking, Management features, Dynamic Segmetations, Routing, Etc.

How many AP's do you need to power?

    Hi Marcel,

Thanks very much for the info, I'm glad I asked. I hadn't realized that the switches would be restricted to limited number of AP's, which of course they are.

In total, there are 68 AP's which need to be set up:

62 x HPE Aruba AP-635 Campus Access Points

    6 x HPE AP-270-MNT-H3 AP-270 Series Outdoor Access Points.

I think I will require the minimum of 802.3(at), which is approx. 30 W per AP. So depending on the power capacity of the switch (370/740 Watts) I could only attach 10 – 20 AP's at most per device.

    Hi,

you can use any Switch model which is providing the recommended PoE values.

    For AP-635 this will be:

    AP-635 (2x POE – active/standby with hitless failover)

–802.3af POE (class 3): not supported

–802.3at POE (class 4): without IPM (disabled USB Port), restricted with IPM (dynamically apply restrictions depending on the available power budget and actual consumption)

–802.3bt POE (class 6): no restrictions

    IPM - Intelligent Power Monitoring - https://www.arubanetworks.com/techdocs/Instant_87_WebHelp/Content/instant-ug/custom-iap-param/ipm.htm

So minimum will be 1 x 802.3at PoE, this will be provided by AOS-CX Switch Series 6000, 6100 and 6200

You have to keep other parameters in mind as well:

    - Uplink Speed

    - need of L2 or L3 functions

    - total PoE Budget needed

    - Stacking needs

    - etc.

    Hi Stefan,

many thanks that's great info. I will take a look at those AOS-CX 6000 Series models you suggested. Our customer has some HP5406 and HP5412 distribution Switches in their Server rooms which have lots of free PoE Ports, but now I realise it's not that straight forward.

Buy whichever switch you want, but the question you should ask is,
which user experience would you like your connected user to have,

Start with the ISP: 100/1000/10000 Mbs, and set your standard,

on next level, in your switch matrix; levels of MPPS, eg. 2930M ~100, 6300M~880..

and switch'es interconnections speed, 1/10/100Gbs. (times one or more)

Interface speed of AP?:  1/2.5/5G, (times one or two).

    This determining the user experience.

The speed expected for the end-user, regarding the ISP connecting (100/1000/10000M),
they should expect "internet" speed of 80/800/1200Gbps.

As single user, but deteriorating declining to the Ap's client maximum and distance,

    and application in use.
