    Hi,

I'm starting new project with OPNsense as router and need and access points also.

So I looking for Cisco 150AX, but I see it's out of stock here in Israel.

So I thought about Aruba AP22, I saw that it's not need external controller, and management via app/cloud.
And if I want to control it locally I need Aruba switch, right?

But before that, what do you think about Aruba AP22 (Instant On) product?

The access points (doesn't matter if Cisco or Aruba) will connect to POE+ switch.

It's important for me to control on all access points in one place (and don't move from login to login to manage each one).
It's also important for me that users can automate move between access point to other (when signal of access point is weak)

    Regards.

I would not recommend the AP22. They are designed for home use.

The equivalent to that cisco AP would be an AP running as Aruba Instant, with one AP as the virtual controller, to manage the others.

The current Aruba Universal APs operate in Instant mode by default, maing this an easy choice. I am not well versed in the current models to make a detailed suggestion.

    Thanks for reply,

I forget to mention, it's for home use.

But I don't care to use professional gear at home :)

For example Aruba AP515, I need some external controller? monthly license to use it?

The AP22 is an Instant ON accesspoint, which is (as explained already) a different product-line with a different community.

For home or small business use, those APs are great. If you need more 'enterprise grade' equipment, the normal Aruba APs are probably better.

How does a small business differentiate between Instant and Instant On then to make a choice?

I know if they expect much growth, Instant APs cane become controller-based campus APs.

How does the different "enterprise grade" equipment differ from Instant On?

For me the main difference is scale, but more important features/settings. Consumer and SMB products are (many times) designed to be simple, which comes with less functionality and fewer knows that you can tweak. I agree there is an overlap where either product could work.

    Thanks for reply,

Then I make some mistake, I need these (AP22/Cisco) for home use, but again, I don't care to use better devices.

The question is, if for Aruba AP enterprise I need some license/external controller to use it?

Not with the Instant APs. I believe Instant On requires a subscription though.

Aruba AP22 (Instant On) don't need some subscription, it's controlled by aruba cloud.

Software updates are not tied to purchase of support pack. You will get new FW when it is available for your InstantOn portal. Like right now it is version 3.0 in deployment.

AP22 is the same HW as AP505 but with InstantOn SW.

When to use InstantON or Enterprise? It's usually determine by two factors:

    1. Price (InstantOn is much cheaper than Enterprise)
    2. Required features.

There are many features available on InstantOn and HPE add new features with every new SW release. But, here is the but :-), feature set is aimed to easy of configuration and maintenance. And it's cloud only.

FW is optimized for SMB and home use. If you wish, you can also use 802.1x authentication if needed.

You can have up to 50 devices per site. And no, you don't need InstantOn switches if so desired.

For home use, if you do not expect to be able to tweak any possible feature in AP, these are great.

    Thanks for reply Gorazd,

For the enterprise gear, for example, Aruba AP515, It's Instant. Do I need some controller to control it? maybe must Aruba Switch?

    Thanks.

    Hi Haviv.

For Instant AP you don't need any controller. When AP boots it will promote itself into virtual controller if it is alone in the network. If it finds existing APs in the same vlan, it will try to join the cluster.

As I wrote, InstantON is great for home and SMB use. Easy to install and manage. But for IT people it can be to simple so we tend to overcomplicate things and have full controll. If you are in this category, InstantOn is probably not the right option :-).

    Thanks for reply,

I'm not IT guy, but love good gear.

If the price of Instant and InstantOn is the same for me, and with Instant I will get better, so I prefer it :)

I'm not afraid from technology, love to learn new stuff.

Just looking for good product for stable WIFI.

There is a huge difference in price between Instant and InstantOn. If you can get Instant AP fro renew program, then it can be very affordable. But still higher then InstantOn.

I looking for prices in Israel,

I saw some second hand AP515 for 298 USD,

While (InstantOn) AP25 new costs 256 USD,

And (InstantOn) AP22 new costs 128 USD.

In your case I would go with Instant :-)

AP515 is same HW as AP25. If you can get a renew AP515, then you have limited lifetime warranty on it.

The AP515 isn't renew, it's just second hand, I don't know if it's have warranty on it.

Limited Lifetime Warranty is usually for the first owner. Here is relevant FAQ:

Who is eligible to start a warranty claim?
The warranty on an Aruba a Hewlett Packard Enterprise Company product is available only to the
original bona fide end user who purchased that product through an authorized HPE distribution
channel. The original bona fide end user may designate an agent to start an HPE warranty claim on their
behalf, and HPE may require written proof of that agency agreement before processing the warranty
claim. If the original bona fide end user transfers their Aruba a Hewlett Packard Enterprise Company
product to a third party, any remaining HPE warranty coverage ceases upon that transfer, and no
subsequent party or user is eligible to obtain warranty service on that product.

Just a small note. If you are not familiar with AOS 8, it can take a little effort to get used to it. It is very user frendly but underlying assumption is that user know concepts of WiFi and is familliar with the terminology.
