  • 1.  Unable to factory reset APIN0335

    Posted Mar 02, 2023 04:20 PM

    Hello,

We've just got one second hand AP-335 for testing and after following process described in the manual to perform a hard reset the AP is keeping the old settings.

Performing the reset LED blinks red first turns to green and blinks fast about 5 times, reset is released, goes back to blink slow and after a few seconds it blinks faster again, finally it stay blinking slowly in green.

Model is APIN0335 and it is connected via PoE injector to a Mikrotik router, ip is assigned by DHCP and can be reached via ping although after 1 minute or so  we can see in router console that the AP link goes down and comes back after 5 seconds assign the same IP again.

Is there any other way to perform a hard reset? we tried SSH but connection is refused.

    Any help will be appreciated.

    Thanks in advance.

    S.J.

    Hello,

LED status is described in the Installation Guide, here  is the link.

Do you already have access via console port? Output can be helpful. You have to be sure that the AP is in IAP and not in CAP mode.

    Hi Waldemar,

I've tried console port with a standard ethernet cable but it didn't worked as i found after reading the manual console port is RS232 so i ordered a ethernet to usb console cable that will arrive tomorrow.

I've read some APs can be switch to IAP which i understand is similar to the stand-alone mode for Cisco devices meaning there is no need for a controller anymore and the AP will work plugged to any router or ISP modem but not sure if i can do that with mine.

Ok i have console access now, already tried clear OS and Cache commands, factory_reset and purgeenv as well, now the AP's old name is gone so i understand the reset worked but i still don't know how to set it to stand alone mode.

Here is a screenshot of printenv

Looks like you have a controller based image on AP.

You will need a controller with OS version 8.6 or higher I believe to convert the AP from Campus to Instant. You will find threads on this topic on the community.

There are some hacks on internet that maybe work but most probably will render the AP unusable.

In Instant you can have cluster or standalone APs. To setup AP as standalone, you need to set:

    apboot> setenv standalone_mode 1

    apboot> saveenv

    apboot> boot

As Gorazd Kikelj wrote, it looks like you have a CAP (campus AP) and not an IAP (instant AP).
When the AP335 was sold, the model classification was different than now. At that time there were CAPs and IAPs. An IAP could be converted to a CAP. After a factory resset, the converted AP became an IAP again. A CAP could not be converted to an IAP.

There must be a sticker on the back of the AP similar to this one:

Compare the part number with the numbers in the data sheet, here is the link. The part numbers are on the last page. So you can check which model you really have.

Meanwhile, a CAP can also be converted to an IAP. You can do this via a mobility controller or directly in apboot.

Meanwhile, a CAP can also be converted into an IAP. This can be done via a mobility controller or directly in apboot. The path via controller is recommended by aruba and is supported. The path via apboot can possibly render the AP unusable.

I hope this information helps you.

Label checked and i can confirm mine is in fact an JW801A model, so is not an IAP.

Right know the only option i have to convert it is via console connection, i've found online what seems to be a safe way to do it but need to download a new firmware but access to those files seems to be for HPE partners only which is not the case for me since we don't have any relationship with them.

Access to FW is for all customers. Unfortunately you don't have IAPs but APs hence no FW download for you as there is no IAP FW for CAP APs.

There are several possibilities what you can do.

The best option is to buy renew or secondhand controller like 7005 and licenses for APs + support hence you can use it as controller based setup.

Get help from a friend with controller.

Or try to hack it, but there is a very high probability that you will render APs inoperative.

    Best, Gorazd
