My apologies if I was unclear. There is a restriction of max 3 versions difference between MM and MD (8.6 on MD and 8.8 on MM is exactly that 3 versions).
There is no restriction in that you need intermediates. So even an upgrade from 8.2 to 8.6 should work without the need of going through 8.3, 8.4, 8.5... And if your MD and MM were running 8.2, you should be able to (manual) upgrade all units to 8.6 in one go, without requiring intermediate upgrades. For cluster upgrades, the original and target firmware version have to be within the 3 versions, but that is the case as well for 8.8 to 8.6.
