  • 1.  VSX and Multicast RP selection

I am replacing Cisco VSS 6500 pair with two Aruba 6400 switches configured as VSX for one customer. in VSS, it is one control plane and RP IP address is the loopback for VSS. It is configured manually in all switches and routers in the campus.

When replacing VSS with VSX, we have two controller planes with two different loop back addresses, one for each VSX switch. I could not find any document in Aruba for the best practice for RP IP address in this case:

    - Configure one RP only, and this is the loop back of 1st 6400 switch. This way I have no redundancy, but the same configuration in all campus switches.
    - Configure two RP in each switch in the campus, one for the 1st 6400 and one for the 2nd 6400. This was I need to modify configuration in all switches in the campus
    - Configure MSDP And RP anycast, this way I have one RP IP address and any 6400 can function as the root for multicast shared tree

What is the recommendation in this case? Any document from Aruba with configuration for both 6400 switches?

Hi! not an expert on Multicast but have ypu tried looking at AOS-CX Multicast deployment and troubleshooting guide (search it on the Community or via Google). For sure there also is an ArubaOS-CX Multicast and Routing Guide IIRC.

In a VSX cluster, the VSX member with the highest IP address will be the forwarder of the multicast traffic.
it is a good idea to use The PIM active-active solution makes one of the VSX devices act as DR and other device as proxy-DR for each of the downstream VLANs.
Also when configuring bsr-candidate, typically loopack interface is used, just make sure that the loopback interface is routable.

check this best practice and FAQ
