  • 1.  What Controller should I use for Aruba AP-505 RW ?

    Posted May 11, 2023 10:53 AM

    Hi Team,

I am new to Aruba AP, we have a Aruba AP which model is HPE R2H28A Aruba AP-505 (RW) Wireless Access Point - New Factory Sealed, in order to use it, I have several questions as below:
    1. Is a controller required?
    2. If yes, what controller should be used?

    Best,
    Michelle

The AP-505 can be uses in IAP (Instant AP) mode and can work autonomously. A controller would be introduced for additional features, and for scalability. IAP cluster size are recommended to stay under 128 APs. Beyond that you would need Controllers or Aruba Central.

You will want to use an RW controller for the AP. Herman gives a good explanation to the Country Code Interoperability here: https://community.arubanetworks.com/community-home/digestviewer/viewthread?MID=27482#bm1946b0d9-5b37-4f50-8920-97582ad6958c

    Hi Dustin ,

Thanks for the reply. 3 follow up questions:
    1. How can we transfer it to IAP mode?
    2. In IAP mode, can we configure ACLs?

    Best,
    Michelle

If you factory reset it it should boot up into IAP mode. Hold reset button, plug in AP, wait 10 seconds, release reset button.

Yes, you can configure ACLs and User Roles.

    Hi Dustin,

We've changed it to IAP mode according to your instruction, but in the webUI we only see configuration of Roles, may I know where can I set up the ACLs?
Below is the setting that I have.

    Best,
    Michelle

Roles fulfill the role of ACLs. YOu define access limitations and permissions in the role. Also you can define vlan assignment, throughput thresholds and other things. Just click on the + and add required actions into the role.

    Hi Gorazd,
Thank you for the details. I found it in IAP mode. Now I am trying the controller mode, and we have an controller at hand, would you please help if this controller works or not? The model is Aruba JW678A 7010 ARCN0103 7010-RW Mobility Branch Controller

    Thanks,
    Michelle

The 7010 controller will work nicely with the AP-505. Please be informed that you either need to have Central subscriptions, and upgrade to AOS10 on controller and APs, or you will need licenses on the controller for ArubaOS 8.X. Please work with your Aruba partner/reseller to understand the difference and best solution in your case.
