  • 1.  What native 10GbE access switches are you running in your network?

    Hi Airheads,

    We're seeing an increase in demand for 10Gb Ethernet and just curious what models others are purchasing and deploying at the access layer?

    From what I can find you have to go as far as the 8000 series for switches (8100) that has native 10Gb copper ethernet ports - though this switch line seems more aimed at data center enviroments or aggregation layers. 

    It does appear that at one point there was a 6300 variant that supported 10GbE but this no longer seems to be the case - anyone know what happened to this?

    You could have a look at the 6300M series; there are models with 24/48 port 10G copper:

    HPE Aruba Networking CX 6300M 48p SR10 PTP/AVB Class8 PoE 4p 100G MACsec Switch (S0E91A)
    HPE Aruba Networking 6300M 24p HPE Smart Rate 1G/2.5G/5G/10G Class6 PoE and 2p 50G and 2p 25G Switch (R8S89A)

    Also there are 10G modules for the 6400 chassis.

    Adding to Herman's list, the reason you couldn't find a 10G 6300 is that the original JL SKUs genuinely didn't have one. Smart Rate on those stopped at 5G. The 10G access ports only showed up later with R8S89A and the S0E91A, so nothing was discontinued, it just arrived after whatever collateral you were reading. If you remember 10G copper disappearing, that's more likely the 3810M or the JL081A module, both end of sale now.

    On your 8100 question, you're right to be suspicious of it for access. It's real 10GBASE-T at 24 or 40 ports, but it has no PoE at all, so it only fits closets serving self-powered gear. Anything with an AP or a camera on it puts you back on the 6300M.

    Between the two 6300M options the deciding factor is usually power, not ports. R8S89A is Class 6, so 60W a port, fine for Wi-Fi 6E and 7 APs. If you're feeding 90W PTZ cameras or multi-radio gear you want the Class 8 S0E91A.
