  • 1.  WiFi Bridge between two APs

    Hi everyone,

    in my last post, i asked about mixing AP214 and AP515. 

    We're now going to replace all AP214 with AP515, so that one hall is up to date.

    Now we have the challange, to equip a second hall, which is directly next to our existing hall, also with WiFi. The problem is, that we currently dont have a cable connection between these halls (Fibre).

    So we're currently investigating solutions to get this done, because our timeline is very strict and sadly, short.

    One possible solution was the use of a WiFi Bridge. My imagination is, that we have a complete cluster of 48 AP515 (24 in each hall).

    Two of the AP's are building a WiFi Bridge, so that we temporary connect the first network switch with the E1 of the AP in hall 2.

    Is this "easy" to configure? And is this easy to switch back to a normal WiFi cluster operation, when we have a working fibre connection between the two halls?

    I hope this is understandable, because im not a native englisch speaker.

    And a second thought: After replacing the AP214, we have these APs for free use.

    Maybe we can create a separate VLAN where these two APs are in, and build a separate cluster with just these two AP214.

    Are they supporting this?

    EDIT: Nevermind, this wont work with a separate VLAN. We can't route the traffic over this.

    Use two APs to create a mesh point-to-point link.  Performance is probably going to be horrible, that many APs in a small-ish area isn't going to provide much in the way of available RF.

    So, is it possible to use two existing APs in a controllerles cluster to configure as Mesh PTP or do i need to configure the whole cluster as mesh?

    Depend on your situation. You can use two standalone APs to establish bridge connection or in cluster establish mesh link between APs. 

    As you know you can't have two instant clusters in the same vlan. 

    And mixing 2xx series with 5xx series will limit your options for FW upgrade among other things.

    Your options are:

    1. Mesh, using a separate pair of APs.  Since you're posting in this group, I'm assuming you're using Instant.  The mesh APs cannot be part of the cluster as you can't extend an IAP cluster through a mesh link that is managed within the cluster, you'll need to deploy the mesh APs as standalone or as a separate cluster.
    2. Wired connection from one AP to another.  Don't do this, you've got a single point of failure through that one AP.
    3. Proper wired connection back to a common LAN.

    Wi-Fi uplink is more of a client bridge solution.
