Wireless Access

I've got one Compaq WL110 network adaptor that is just out of range of my access point. I know that there is an antenna that can be bought for these to increase the range. Can anyone tell me how much the range increases when you add the antenna?

There is an external antenna that Compaq sells but it is not real practical for the card when plugged into a PC. . .I think they are rated at either 3 or 6 (cannot remember DB gain)...these are really designed to be used with the 110 cards when they are plugged into a WL series (e.g. WL510) access point. . .

There may be a third party solution however. . .

It might be a lot cheaper and work better to get a cheap access point and locate it a little closer to where you want to use your pc. I got mine for $64.

The card in question has a very good range. so if your access point does not have an external antanna or is placed in the wrong place you will have problems.

Place the AP as high in the house as possible, if you are using the HP WL510 system then you can buy a Range extender antenna with about a 5db gain from HP or ? which will also connect to the WL110 card in your pc.

If you are using Lower end type AP location is about the only thing that can help you.

If this is at the office you might request them to maybe move the AP a little closer or expand their coverage by adding another AP.

Remember the Antenna only works in the Compaq Access Points: WL410, WL510

The HP/Compaq aerial is a Range Extender Antenna
230268-B21 and can be found on HP's website. It offers 2.5dbi of real gain and can be connected to a WL110 card by simply removing the WL110's little circular black cap. HP quote the increase of range in an enclosed environment at 15% or 50% outdoors.
It does work but I found my intermittant connections were caused by interference from an uninteruptable power supply!!
