Wireless Access

Hi,

I have on my EVO n400c a WLAN Compaq multiport module (I think the "old" one, NOT the W200) and I am running Windows 2000, and I really would like to connect to the WLAN at my office (that's why I bought it in the first place), BUT:
Neither the Aegis-client nor the Odyssey-client is working properly. Although the module gets a connection to the network, the clients are seemingly not able to get any information about the network from the module, i.e. the list of available networks is always empty "N/A". In the case of the Odyssey-client, the module is not even automatically recognized.

I tried already all sorts of drivers from the HP-website, and I would be happy about any sort of advice.

The Windows 2000 drivers for this device will not work with any other client software than the utility it is shipped with. The Aegis and Odyssey clients assume a device driver API that is not implemented by the driver. The device driver API was first implemented by Microsoft in Windows XP for use by their Windows Wireless Zero Configuration utility. The use of this API by other clients, especially in Win2K, did not occur until these module went end of life from an engineering point of view.

I have a multiport 802.11b old version and would like to be able to select the network I am on from a list so I don't have to type in the WEP key and SSID manually every time I go to a place with a different network. Is this what the software you are referring to adds?

For features that you request, you need software that works with the driver to determine what networks are near. To make that work, you need a driver that supports an API to give the software information about networks it can see.

The original MultiPort WLAN module's Win2000 drivers do not support this API, but the WinXP drivers do support it. For the features you request, your best bet is to move to WinXP and use Wireless Zero Config.

Trouble is I know other wireless cards do this with w2k.

Does the w200 wireless multiport allow me to create several profiles and swap between them. I would rather get a new multiport than switch to xp.

The Win2K software for the W200 MultiPort WLAN module does allow for multiple profiles, but the switching between them is not automatic, you as the user select the new desired profile from the list to switch profiles.
