  • 1.  Apple wireless protocols and multiple WAPs

    I have one 655 WAP at my site. If I add a second, I'm wondering about potential problems with Apple devices. With my old WAPs I have found that Apple's operating systems don't work with some wireless devices when a wired host tries to access them or possibly when the host is wireless but connected to one WAP while the device is connected to a different WAP on the same LAN, even if a single SSID is in use. An example is a Canon wireless printer that is not visible from some iPads, the theory being the different WAPs idea, also a Mac that doesn't see the printer when the Mac is connected to the LAN wirefully and the wireless printer is connected to some WAP.

    So, my question: if I add a second 655 WAP, can the existence of the two be hidden from such devices as this rubbish printer, encapsulated as a single logical wireless network? Or am I likely to get all the same problems that I used to get with my ancient ZyXEL WAPs? - because this is something truly insane about Apple and then the printer's software. I realise that this is more of a question for Apple, but the 'structurehiding' capabilities question is the central one relating to Aruba.

    If those devices use ip, you should just be able to point the apple device to the printer.  If those devices use airprint, you can configure airgroup so that the access points can discover apple printers and present them to connecting devices.  You also have the option of disabling broadcast filtering, which would allow all of the mdns traffic through and allow discovery.

    Many thanks - that's very helpful indeed. The evil Canon printer must be using Apple AirPrint. Is the broadcast filtering feature on by default? Because if so then you've saved me from a nasty bug - something to watch out for. A failure of mDNS looks exactly like the kind of thing that could be responsible for the problems I have already.

    Yes it is.  Under Advanced, make sure broadcast filtering is disabled.
