May i check with regards to the following, does the cluster need to be built in a layer 2 subnet?

I do understand that if the publisher and subscriber is stretch across two datacentres, which are on different subnet.

Yes, that is possible and supported. Publisher and subscriber don't need to be in the same subnet. Some disadvantages of a layer 3 cluster are:

• No support for Virtual IP configuration
• Need of a load-balancer for (guest) captive portal functionalities
