  • 1.  ClearPass not counting license utilization

    Posted Sep 03, 2025 07:10 AM

    Hi

One of my customers have a ClearPass cluster, version 6.11.10, with mostly C3010 nodes and some C3000V nodes.

One server is a dedicated Publisher and one a dedicated Insight server. Remaining servers are authentication servers.

In the cluster we have 2x25k Access licenses. But under the Licensing section there are no used licenses.

Licenses are activated and have valid support

The customer have several other regional clusters, all of them are counting license utilization. Any idea why the license isn't counted or is this something for TAC to investigate?

RADIUS accounting properly configured on the NADs? No firewalls blocking UDP/1813?

Accounting is working normally, and as far as I know RADIUS Accounting isn't needed to count licenses, just to be able to release licenses when a client disconnects.

If Accounting isn't enabled the licenses should be allocated for a device for 24 hours.

I have not seen this before. Indeed, please open a TAC case, or if you are sure you don't violate the license, you may ignore it.

EDIT: About the discussion above on accounting: accounting is not needed for license counting., it's just that if you don't have accounting, each authenticated device will be counted for 24 hours after the last authentication. With accounting, if there is an accounting STOP, which happens when the client disconnects, the counted license is released immediately. With broken accounting you would expect a higher count, not a zero count.

I have not opened a ticket with TAC as I'm sure we are note over our current licenses. I have 2x25k but before the counter stopped working we where about 20k in license utilization.
