In the attached snapshot, for the address field its mentioned that we can enter the address or hostname of the controller (Instant in my case). I created a simple web login page and entered the IP Address of my VC, it only redirects to the admin page of VC. But when i entered the cn (copying output of  show captive-portal-domains) it redirects and submit the credentials properly.

My question is, is it mandatory to have the CN always? if yes why its saying we can enter the IP address also?

The browsers are the forcing hand on most problems with IP these days. It is not a problem of CN vs IP, it is a problem of trusted SSL or not.  You did not show any browser logs or traces of exactly what 'not working' means, but I would guess that the browser is refusing the POST over https to an IP.  There are historical vendor setups and workflows that outright required submission over HTTP.  Those setups are perfectly fine with IP.

We recommend the industry standard to have real valid certificates end to end and any variance from that you are on your own.
