Hi,

We deployed a couple of HP3400-48cl Procurve switches at our customer's site with several of our servers via straight CAT6 cables. Our servers Gig-E ports are auto MDI/MDIX. Our customer was complaining that how come the MDI mode for all ports are not consistent showing all MDI but with some ports showing MDIX?

Is this normal? More importantly does this create problems? Appreciate your help. Thanks.

This can be very normal.

Basically with straight trough cable, the port goes into MDI if the other end of the link is MDI-x and vice verca.

With MDI to MDI or MDI-X to MDI-X an crossover cable is used.

So if a straight trough cable is used, with MDI the other side needs to be MDI-X and with MDI-X the other side needs to be MDI

It's optional, but common for Gigabit NICs to support auto-MDIX. Where both ends support it, it is essentially random which end will crossover first.

If it bothers your customer, it can be turned off at the switch, or (presumably) by poking around with the NIC driver configuation. Without evidence it's causing a real problem, I'd leave well alone.

I agree 100% with Richard. It's expected behaviour with 1000BASE-T which must support Auto-MDIX.

i have problem in my hp procureve switch 2610 POE 24-port the problem is iam not able to connect cisco ip phone 7960 in stright through cable, customer need stright through cable but crossover cable is working and i change mdi - mdix, power option and enable per - standard setting also web & cli mode.

 

pls give me solution very urgent
