  • 1.  Problem When Roaming between Aruba Network and GPON

    Posted Mar 09, 2025 06:35 AM

There is a resort's network infrastructure where Aruba APs are connected to the GPON for the guest room areas, whereas Aruba APs are connected to Aruba switches in other areas.

    • Aruba network: Aruba Gateway <--> Aruba Core Switch <--> Aruba Access Switch <--> Aruba AP
    • GPON network: Aruba Gateway <--> Aruba Core Switch <--> GPON OLT <--> GPON ONT <--> Aruba AP

All Aruba devices are managed through Aruba Central, running on AOS10.

The Wi-Fi users have been experiencing frequent network connection interruptions when roaming between the Aruba and GPON networks. When they move from other locations to a location where the Aruba AP is connected to the GPON, their devices cannot obtain a valid IP address.

If anyone has experienced a similar problem, what could be the cause of this issue and how has it been rectified?

Difficult to say based in the information.
Is it an overlay / tunnelled SSID? Is roaming not working correctly or is a device not able to connect to the network when the AP is connected via the GPON network?

It is not an overlay/tunnelled SSID.

When the user roams to the AP connected via the GPON network, the user device fails to obtain a valid IP address for a couple of minutes before suddenly obtaining one and having internet access.

Then double check the GPON network. Is the VLAN allowed on that network? Check the bridge table on the AP and switches to check the gateway MAC in the user VLAN is learned.

Based on this I don’t think the issue is in the AP domain

Didn’t read your post well. Can it that the MAC tables in the GPON / switch network isn’t update fast enough?

are you using LAG on the Aruba core switch to connect to GPON?

    Hi Will,

    Have similar environment.

Have a GPON network in a Nursing Home.

Basement levels, the ARUBA WAPs are connected direct to an ARUBA switch via Cat6. Although not used intensely as basement is essentially carpark, staff amenities. The ASCOM i63 handsets appearsa workwithout issue

On the Ground to Level 4 floors all the WAPs are connected via a GPON network and connect to an ONT ethernet port.

In this scenario the handsets occasionally loose Network Connection.

Handsets show the message No Network or No Access on the handset screen

The second more confusing experience is that while roaming the handset can loose RTP both-ways then will reconnect RTP when the ASCOM handset switches to another AP.

The ARUBA WAPS are Aruba AP-635 Access Point, running firmware version 8.10.0.15_91324.

Aruba uses a Virtual Controller which is a role shared among the access points, and managed in Aruba Central

Are there any sites with ARUBA working over GPON  ???

    Thanks

    Bernie
