Wireless Access

I've been using my hp pavilion zv6000 for over a year now connecting to a wireless network with the built in card. I finally invested in an external hard drive to back my data up on and while backing up I disabled the wireless assistant via right clicking the wireless assistant icon in the notification area of the task bar. When I rebooted my computer I could not turn the wireless back on. Pushing the button on the keyboard doesn't work and the icon is no longer there. I tried the repair option available when right clicking on the wireless network connection icon in the network connections window and that wasn't able to turn it on either. Anybody know what might have happened?

Surely there is a program concerning wireless connection! What OS are you using?

In XP, you can instruct Windows to manage wireless networks by selecting My network places properties, and then the properties of the wireless connection, second tab.

I'm assuming that your wireless card shows up in device manager.

I'm using XP and I do see my wireless card in the device manager and I've looked at the properties of the connection and everything looks fine and I've tried disabling and reenabling it, but nothing works. I even found the HP wireless assistant program (same program I used to disable it) and tried running it, but nothing happens.

Try to reinstall drivers for that device...
Sometimes it helps(I don't know why but some it did, maybe because it's windows;-)

For me the following works:

1. You run into the "wireless is gone" situation, e.g. after automatic Standby.
2. Now disable WLAN manually (switch off using the WiFi button).
3. Force Standby (close the case and wait until all lights after off, which may take some seconds).
4. Switch on the WLAN button again.
5. Afterwards (not before) open the case again and press some button in order to wake up the notebook again.

WLAN will be back.

Unfortunately, Iâ m joining the disappearing wireless card club being that Iâ m experiencing many of the same symptoms identified on this forum. I have a dv6000 that is about 13 months (purchased in Sep of 06), so Iâ m out of warrantee and obliviously screwed.

Since the end of June 2007, Iâ ve had nothing but problems with this laptop. First, the video started failing. Long story short, I sent it in to HP for service. Two weeks later I received the device back with a resolution that the motherboard was replaced â due to excessive heat. When I received the machine back from HP and booted it up, I experienced the same symptoms (as if tech support did nothing â fix or test). I called back HP and had the machine returned to the service center for repair. Three weeks and several phone calls latter, I received the device back stating that the memory was replaced. Booted up the machine and the machine would freeze after ~60 minutes of use. After going through the basic troubleshooting process with the Technician yet again, I was eventually was able to convince HP to take back the machine. Three weeks later, I received the machine back stating that the processor was replaced. The machine worked fine up until this past weekend (10/28) when the wireless card disappeared.

When I called HP regarding this, they responded that I was out of warrantee. Byeâ ¦..

Great. I've been researching this same issue, now I feel hopeless. I got it to work once by restoring to a previous time. The second time it happened this no longer worked. Then I got it to work by resetting defaults in the setup utility. Again, this only worked once & had problems with the browser that time. Now I can't get it to work at all. I've downloaded new drivers & HP wireless assistant, but it still won't run. I too just ran out of warranty - should've known to extend it when the hard-drive crashed a few months back. How come no problems show in the diagnostics or device manager? And how come I can't find anything on HP troubleshooting about it? It is obviously and issue and HP needs to figure this out!

Chacho Rodriguez which part of this conversation you did not understand. What every bit of information will help to you HP guys. Why HP do not confirm that HP product ( nootebuks)have some major problem, and resolve them- simply stop sell them and reimburse to your customers. Thank you.

I have just incountered the same problem a few days ago also. It's as if the wireless was never there! Tried to update drivers, etc, etc. Oh, model is V6305. The switch at the front left slides left or right, orange light stays on but no wireless icon. Connect via cable from router, no problems, just no wireless connection. Can't even open the wireless from the control panel....can anyone one help?

I have a Presario F560 EM running Vista. My wireless has also stopped, the light stays red and the Wireless Assistant won't start.
I've updated the BIOS and reinstalled the driver but it's still broken.
It had been working OK for about 8 months but we've moved abroad and I'm not going to put it in the post.
It works OK with an Ethernet cable. I may buy a USB wireless adapter but I'm not so sure about buying another Compaq.

You can try flashing the BIOS using winflash.
Flashing your BIOS to the latest release is crucial because it enhances your system's capabilities and helps it to detect newer devices and components. Very often in the latest BIOS flashes manufacturers apply a series of bug fixes.

Go to http://welcome.hp.com/country/us/en/support.html, select your PC specification and the winflash that suits ur processor and O.S.

That link doesn't work Swordfish. Besides I tried reloading the BIOS and it's still broken.
It has worked twice in the last few months for a short time after a reboot but it's not consistent so I doubt that it's software, I think the card itself is faulty.
I'm now using a D-Link USB adapter which works fine. The rest of the machine seems OK too touch wood....

I tried WinFlashing, and reinstalling the Broadcom drivers, and still no joy...

I updated to BIOS version F.1F when the problem first happened and it made no difference. This thread is going round in circles and just wastes everbody's time
Someone from HP must know what's going on, what's the point of them hosting this forum?
My advice would be just to get a USB adapter.

The (intrnal)wireless assistant is broken. Hook up an external wirless router ,like net gear,(best buy) and you will be good to go again! That is what I did. Nothing else works- no need to do a system restore or anything else. HP has a bad internal wireless router that is not good for longer then a year. Most external routers are plug and play. Hook up their wireless box to your internet modem and plug in the jump drive (external wireless router) into you laptop. Install drivers and you will be up an running in 5 minutes.

My Compaq Presario has now failed completely and just 18 months old. Pressing the start button just causes the optical drive to click once and that's it. So 6 months without the wireless and now after 18 months it's all junk.

I'd say that the faulty wireless card is just a symptom of the machine's general poor build quality.

I liked my Presario but I won't be buying any more Compaq equipment.

Same here! Wireless worked for a couple months and now it won't do a thing. I have an hp pavilion dv9000 and I love it except for this problem. As some of the others have suggested i think it is a problem with the card itself and not the software. I've reinstalled hp wireless assistant which still won't open, uptaded my drivers and BIOS. Nothing helps.

Deja vu. Same symtoms on a Pavilion dv9000. Drivers are there, system says it is working. Tried disabling and enabled, rebooted, restored. Wireless assistant won't run and system can't see any networks. Not happy.

I just contacted hp support with this problem and they said my pavilion dv9000 is eligeble for factory repaire, even though it no longer has warranty. They will pay for shipping and the cost of a new WLAN card. Oviously they know there is a problem and it was their fault. Nice of them, although there's only some of us lucky few who will be able to take advantage of their offer. BTW, they call it an "Enhancement."

Same problem! I was told that 100 days out of warranty means I must pay or go online for a chat with a technician. Chat link does not work! Called again and was told abruptly that my refusal to pay made me ineligible to speak to someone. Supervisor was more polite, but also not helpful.

Since this is clearly a pervasive issue (mine is a tx1417cl) I would have thought that customers would get the kind of service that Mr Shank expected and received.

Not sure what to do next. I don't think that HP is playing fair with this issue.

They are not playing fair.

They only replace the mother boards (NVIDIA chip is in MB) of the laptops that have AMD processors not ones with Intel. And only certain model numbers too.

Losing your wireless is only the first step of the NVIDIA GPU going bad. Next it will be the display. See this huge thread about the NVIDIA GPU problems.

After a series of reboots and updating, I was given a "lifeline" to actually speak with a live "case manager." Imagine my excitement at receiving a real HP phone number and a real case number. I called immediately and was received very courteously by the HP case manager who seriously explained to me the same situation that had been communicated to me by the "HP Total Care" staff via email -

1) that there were "not enough" ("not enough" - like "enough" is left undefined) complaints about this pervasive problem and therefore a recall has not been issued; and

2) that three large threads on this HP sponsored website (and other forums on the internet - try google) detailing this particular HP problem did not constitute a concern for HP; and

2) that a repair would cost $400 and a small discount would be offered as my computer was purchased in January 2008.

I have purchased a Belkin 802.11g netwpork adaptor, installed the software and am running wirelessly for around $30.

I bought a hp dv5-1002 July 31, 2008. The dumb wireless switch stop working on this dumb laptop. I notice that it started getting flaky around April 2009 I thought nothing of it because the issue was not that bad the wireless switch would come back with a restart. Now it won't even turn on it just stays amber been looking through forums and notice that the fix is to buy an external wireless usb or pcmcia device. Is that the only fix. HP what are you guys going to do about this your laptops are not to good.

This is either a case of "planned obsolescence" or an honest problem that just isn't cost effective for HP to alleviate. PCs in general, and HPs in particular, just aren't the same as they used to be.

I'm beginning to experience the same problems as everyone else here. The external switch won't enable wireless detection, and stays in the amber hue. I've sent the machine in for both the wireless and the display before, and after replacing the motherboard that had supposedly burned out, I received the machine back only to go through it all again.

If this currently isn't a large enough problem to cause a profit drop for HP, then people need to start buying from a company that takes its products seriously the first time. All I can say to that end is, "good luck."

All you gota do is buy one of thos wireless usp adapters and it will bi-pass the failed chip in your laptop.
I haven't tried it yet because my chip is still in the process of failing, but the tech said this should work.

This solution is unfortunately temporary.

The problem appears to be with the motherboard which WILL fail sooner (rather than later). I used the temporary "fix" of a Belkin USB wireless adapter which worked fine for a couple of months - but then the motherboard failed completely.

It now only engages the hard drive from a cold boot with vigorous pressing of F12.

HP want "between 450 to 650" US $ to replace the motherboard which lasted only about 13 months before starting to fail.

I have the same problem with the tx 1320 us. I'm appalled at the lack of integrity HP is showing here. A friend of mine is an attorney with a large firm in Philadelphia, PA - he is doing some discovery to see if the wireless problem qualifies for class action status. He said that the plaintiffs injuries need to exceed 5 million dollars - and if HP's preferred solution is to charge us $400.00 dollars a pop to fix our machines...well I think it will be way beyond 5 million. Hopefully HP will come to their senses and recall the faulty machines.

I bought my dv9005 in 11/06 and just got the same problem.

Am now using an external Link Sys WUSB300N card. Works ok for now.

I just had the same problem with my wife's HP Pavillion dv6000 laptop.

It was working fine, then just stopped recognizing the wireless card. My daughter had been using it, so I was in doubt as to what had/hadn't been done to it software-wise (virus?). So I ran the complete recover to restore everything to the state when it was new.

Still can't recognize the wireless. The indicator light stays orange no matter which position the switch is in.

So I google "HP dv6000" looking for a manual, and the FIRST thing I find is a Recall notice http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&docname=c01087277 Yeah, I know, they're covering their butts by calling it a
"Limited Warranty Service Enhancement" but they basically know that these machines were defective from the date of manufacure. They told me that my machine didn't qualify for the free service because it was 9 months past the warranty extension and tried to get me to shell out $250 for a new mother board.

Maybe I'll try the external wireless card solution, but it sounds like the MB will probably go bad next. I've owned a bunch of HP computers (have four of them working in the house right now) but I'll probably be looking at Dell next time around.

Apparently this is an issue known by Hewlett-Packard and they make no attempt to satisfy their customers by resolving the issue free of charge. I have a D9000 in which the wireless disappeared and when I looked into the control panel I noticed that there was no wireless card. I replaced the drivers, I replaced the wireless card, I updated the bios and I research this issue online to find that some laptops have issues with this sort of problem. I noticed that they extended the warranty on these laptops for one year but after I found out that my warranty expired three months prior to this wireless card expiring itself. I cantacted HP and I was told that if I was to send it out to a computer repair shop, it would cost me 400+ dollars to fix and that HP would fix it for only $250 which I feel is ridiculous. Apparently they've know of this issue and they obviously have it set up so that their customers get screwed because they know this problem will more than likely pop up after the end of expiration. This should apparently be a recall where HP should replace and repair the situation at no expense to their customers.

Same problem with pavilion tx1000. Restored to factory condition, reinstalled drivers, updated bios, replaced wireless adapter with another original product... nothing made it work. Just called HP, they are willing to fix it for $3xx, f that. I am going to get usb wireless adapter as the remedy to this chronic issue.

Same problem here. Tried everything in the book but light still stays orange,meaning windows can not detect a wireless connection.So I contacted HP Tech Support on the issue and I was appalled by support Techs attitude. He would not help me because my Pavillion dv6458se was out of warranty and I were to spend $2xx to purchase a warranty so he could help or spend a mere $50 now and he could try to troubleshoot on line. But better yet, I was pitched to purchase a new Laptop right then and for sure he would beat any price Best Buy or other big stores could offer. So, I am trying to solve a problem associated with HP's own shortfall and I get to hear a salespitch. Very disappointed with HP.

Thought I'd add my 2 cents....I've had a DV9000 for something over 2? years now. AMD processor, came with vista 64bit, but I dual boot with, and use almost exclusively, Ubuntu.

Turned on the lappy the other day and I had the same problem. Wireless won't turn on. light just stays orange. Booting to 'doze gives the same thing.

Ordered an intel wireless card thinking that the card went bad, no joy, same thing. So I started searching and found this thread. Looks like I'm SOL same as everybody else.

You need to turn on the wireless in the windows mobility center.

Start>Control Panel> Mobile PC> Windows Mobility Center

It's the top right button which will prob be a button that says "Turn Wireless On" click this

You need to trust the people on here Taylorwireless, this is a hardware problem.

The first thing to buy is a USB Wifi stick, then when the whole machine collapses replace it with anything other than HP/Compaq.

If you're having problems with the orange light and not getting your wireless to turn on even if it thinks is on then try the Windows Mobility Center. Right click on the battery icon and get to it that way.

there might be more problems with other computers but this fixes my problem every time. Try if before sending your's in or buying a new computer

Thanks Taylorwireless but like I said earlier the wireless failing was a wake up to the fact that the whole motherboard is not appropriate. Just after the warranty expired the thing refused to boot. Just 2 clicks from the optical drive and then nothing.

Thanks, everyone, for the information...good to know the MB's future destination...this is my second HP notebook...same thing. Can get a little more life out of them in their docking stations, for some reason, but docking stations are inconvenient to lug around...

I had a couple of months of down time a few years ago to begin working on my first HP issue...spent lots and lots of time with HP, with no useful results. Owner of two HP notebooks, two HP docking stations, two HP printers...

I just had the same problem. The wireless doesn't work anymore and the permanent orange light.
We have treads here since 2006. Same problem over and over again, no matter the model.

I've only had my hp pavilion for 4 months and my wireless went out, i've tried everything under the sun and nothing worked. I am so not pleased right now, 4 months are u serious.

Common issue that HP is aware of. It is a motherboard defect that usually goes out right after the warranty expires.I was tired of using a USB wireless card and I was disgusted with the results of my customer service. After several calls the only resolution given to me was 300 dollar cost to fix it by replacing the MB. I ended up selling the POS as a parts machine and took a big hit financially. I've been working on computers for almost 10 years and this is not the first time I've had a personal issue with their machines.

Just had the same problem with my HP! Wireless card quit working. Called HP and was told that I should be happy that my computer lasted for 4 years. I was first told that I could pay $260 to get the wireless card and MB replaced. I then talked to a supervisor (Andy) who tried to tell me that HP has no corporate office that I could call. I told him he was wrong and he said that they do have a corporate office but they only use email to communicate. He refused to give me an email address and then told me I could go online to get a phone number. I reminded him that my "oh so reliable" HP couldn't connect to the internet. Once I finally got in touch with the corporate office they told me that as of July 31, 2010, they could no longer even work on my computer, so the replacement parts that were offered to me for $260 are no longer available. So pretty much, I'm screwed. But they did offer me a coupon to HP and if I bought a new HP computer today, they would give me an extra year on the extended warranty!

We had two HP6730b's with the same issue. After trying everything posted on line, the fix was to re-install the HP Wireless Assistant v3.5 for Win7, 64.

I have the same problem with with my HP Pavilion tx1110us notebook. Downloaded HP Wireless Assistant version 3.50.9.1 (23 July 2009) but no luck. The re-installed HP Wireless Assistant doesn't even open.

Hope someone can find a solution to it.

I also ran into this problem, got the run around from HP, but no resolutions. I have already recommended to my customers the HP Pavillion models and after I have shown them the issues that I ran into with my customer support experience and how widespread it was: the schoolboard changed their orders of 1200 units to another product. I have been using another product for years also and never experienced an issue that cannot be resolved with self-help or a brief call to a human being.

I was proud of our products and now I am just too sad...

I have ran into this problem with several HP dvxxxx models. On more than one occasion, it turned out to be the wireless was disabled in the BIOS. Whether it was from user error, by accidentally turning it off or BIOS upgrades, where is was never turned on. Make sure and check that it is enabled in your BIOS!

i'm too excited to go back and figure out the exact way how i fixed, but here it goes:

-when the computer boots up press f10 to go to bios
-under boot devices or something about startup devices, it says something about internal network something...
-i know there were 4 things and of those 4 one of them was 'disabled'. so after enabling it, BAM
-i registered a username to share this for you guys cause there was so much stress around this issue haha. hope this works!

scratch previous post. problem is back..

Update your bios to the latest version. Go into CMOS after Bios update and make sure that LAN is ENABLED, SAVE and restart. Should fix your your problem.

Ok, Here's the scoop on the dead wireless button light. I just fixed mine and this is how I did it on my HP ZD8000.

You need to go into the bios and reset the bios to the default setting.

To do this restart your computer and hold down the F10 key to get into the bios.

Now use the arrow keys to get to the last tab on the right. In that tab you will find three options one of them will be "reset to default" or "default settings" ect. Depending on your bios. select that one with the arrow keys and click your "enter" key.Select "Y" for yes and click enter again Now select "Save Changes and exit" and click "enter" key. Select "Y" and hit the enter Key again. after your computer fully restarts the wireless button should begin functioning.

Just had the same problem with my HP Pavillion dv6 (18 months old) and read all the threads on this site.
Found my answer by restarting my laptop, then switching off with the power button right away and lo and behold the blue (wireless) light came on - problem solved!
